Poznań: Cultural History and Lake Malta
Accommodation in Poznań
Poznań combines cultural and historical themes with notable places around Lake Malta. The Royal-Imperial Route, Cathedral Island and Brama Poznania ICHOT represent different historical perspectives; at the lake, the regatta course, a fountain and other facilities shape the landscape. This gives you a choice when planning your trip between the city’s cultural heritage and the different features of Lake Malta.
The Royal-Imperial Route and Historic Sites
The Royal-Imperial Route consists of several connected routes that lead through different parts of central Poznań and cover different themes. Rather than focusing on a single route with just one theme, it offers a thematic approach to cultural heritage. Cultural and tourism events about Poznań’s cultural heritage are held along the route each year. These include guided walks, city rallies, group tours, lectures, workshops, exhibitions and other activities. If you would like to include a particular event in your travel plans, check its date before your trip.
Brama Poznania ICHOT is an interpretation centre devoted to the oldest part of Poznań. Cathedral Island was once one of the most important strongholds of the emerging Polish state and is an important point on the Piast Trail. An installation on the island depicts the palace of Mieszko I. The presumed site of his baptism is also on Cathedral Island. The history of the stronghold, its connection to the Piast Trail and references to Mieszko I offer different perspectives on the city’s cultural history.
These sites offer distinct cultural and historical perspectives: the Royal-Imperial Route connects multiple routes and types of events, Brama Poznania ICHOT focuses on the oldest part of the city, and Cathedral Island is associated with the history of the stronghold, the Piast Trail and Mieszko I. This lets you decide whether to focus your trip on a variety of themes and activities or on specific historical connections.
Lake Malta: Dimensions and Shoreline Features
Lake Malta was created by damming the Cybina River and covers 64 hectares. The regatta course at the lake is 2,190 metres long and between 170 and 400 metres wide. The area measurement refers to the lake, while the measurements in metres refer to the regatta course. Poznań’s largest fountain is on the western shore. It was built to commemorate the 750th anniversary of the city’s founding. The lake brings together a body of water, a sports facility with specific dimensions and an urban landmark with a historical significance.
Thermal springs on the northwestern shore are used by the Termy Maltańskie water park. A ski slope on the southern shore is open year-round; check its operating status before your trip if you would like to include it in your plans. There is also a toboggan run on Wolności Hill on the southern shore. A swimming area is located near Lake Malta. The fountain, thermal springs, ski slope and toboggan run are on different shores; the swimming area is near Lake Malta.
The cultural sites and Lake Malta therefore offer different themes for a stay in Poznań: historical connections on the one hand, and a lake with a regatta course, fountain and other features described above on the other. Plan your trip around whichever of these themes interests you most.
