Destinations around Mantua combine Renaissance cityscapes with wetlands, cycling routes and experiences on the water. You can choose different focuses for your stay: UNESCO World Heritage and palaces, a cycling tour or nature watching. The places and activities below offer practical starting points for planning.

Renaissance cityscapes

The Renaissance is expressed in two different urban forms in Mantua and Sabbioneta. UNESCO describes Mantua as the renewal and expansion of an existing city: its irregular layout documents stages of development dating back to Roman times. Sabbioneta, by contrast, was laid out in the second half of the 16th century as a planned city with a regular grid. It embodies the Renaissance ideal of the perfect city. Mantua and Sabbioneta are part of a UNESCO World Heritage site, inscribed in 2008 under criteria (ii) and (iii). Anyone interested in urban planning can compare a structure that evolved over a long period with one that was deliberately designed.

Palaces and history

Palazzo Te was built and decorated between 1525 and 1535 as a masterpiece by Giulio Romano. It offers general and themed educational programs for schools, including hands-on workshops; accompanied groups of children are also catered for. Palazzo Te has a single entrance with a ramp. Palazzo Ducale developed into a palace city: galleries, porticoes and monumental squares connect its parts. These connections shape the complex as much as the individual buildings do. The monastery complex of Polirone offers another historical point of reference. Tedaldo di Canossa founded it in 1007 on an island between the Po and the Lirone rivers.

Rivers and wetlands

The area around Mantua is shaped by the Po, Mincio, Chiese, Oglio and Secchia rivers, as well as by drainage and land-reclamation canals. The Paludi di Ostiglia are a special natural area: this nature reserve is home to 175 bird species, forms part of the Natura 2000 network and is recognized as a wetland of international importance. Future surveys may change the species count. A paved path leads from the visitor center to the bird hides. Access is free year-round on foot or by bicycle. Check local access conditions before your visit.

By bike and on the water

The Oltrepò Mantovano cycling network covers more than 470 kilometers and connects villages and hamlets with historic buildings, museums, water-management structures, parks and nature reserves. For individual routes, it is advisable to check the route and conditions before setting out. The Ciclovia Mantova–Peschiera starts at Mantova station and follows the artificial Diversivo del Mincio canal; a branch leads to the Bosco della Fontana state reserve. The Paludi di Ostiglia are also connected via the Ciclabile dei Parchi, Via Claudia Augusta and provincial cycle route 9. On the UNESCO cycling route, a regional train is provided for the return trip from Suzzara to Mantova, and bicycles are always allowed on board. Check the timetable and bicycle carriage conditions before your journey.

I Barcaioli del Mincio offer boat trips on Lago Superiore and in the Valli del Mincio; departures are scheduled from Rivalta sul Mincio, Grazie di Curtatone and Mantova. Confirm current arrangements with the provider before your trip. One of the boats is equipped to carry people with disabilities and is fully covered against rain. If this feature is important to your plans, confirm it in advance as well.
