Poggio Rusco offers several ways to shape a stay: churches with different architectural histories, memorial sites connected with “Operazione Herring,” an autumn event and a named cycling route. When planning your trip, you can choose which of these to focus on based on your interests. Architectural history and remembrance form a cultural focus; cycling offers a different perspective on the town and the region.

Churches and architectural history

The Chiesa Parrocchiale S.S. Nome di Maria was built between 1748 and 1770 in a light Baroque style, based on a design by the architect Nicolini. The construction period, style and architect are all identified—concrete points of reference if you are interested in the design of historic churches.

The Chiesetta/Oratorio del Tagliaferro was completed in 1771. Beside the altar, it has vaulted openings that may have served as galleries for women and guests of honor. The two buildings were constructed close together in time: the oratory was completed the year after construction of the parish church ended.

The Chiesa di Stoppiaro tells a different architectural story: it replaced an earlier, smaller church that was demolished in the early 17th century. Here, the focus is on the replacement of the church building, while the parish church stands out above all for its construction period and style.

The Torre Falconiera o Colombara, also known as Culumbèra, probably served as a lookout post or a refuge in times of danger. Its former function is therefore not certain, but is described as a historical possibility.

Remembering “Operazione Herring”

The present-day Chiesa di Dragoncello was built in the 1960s to a design by Prof. Lino Morselli, in memory of those who fell during the famous “Operazione Herring.” Its unusual shape, rising toward the sky, recalls hands folded in prayer and also evokes the paratroopers who descended from the sky.

The Ara Monument commemorates the paratroopers who fell during “Operazione Herring.” It was inaugurated on 30 April 1965. The church and monument place emphasis on different things: the church’s soaring form is part of its memorial meaning, while the Ara Monument’s inauguration date marks a specific moment in time.

Autumn event and cycling

The Rassegna Corale has been held in Poggio Rusco every autumn since 2007. Six choirs perform, including one from abroad. If you would like to include the event in your travel plans, check the date for the autumn you have in mind.

One specific cycling option is the grey route “I sapori dell’Oltrepò,” which passes through Poggio Rusco and is 48 kilometres long. This should be distinguished in scale from the Oltrepò Mantovano cycle network, which spans more than 470 kilometres. It connects villages and hamlets, historic buildings, museums, water-management structures, parks and nature reserves. One figure refers to a specific route, while the other describes the extent of a regional network.

Road and rail

The Strada Provinciale 496 Virgiliana connects Poggio Rusco with the provincial capital and nearby Ferrara. The town is also a strategic railway junction. The Brenner corridor, Bologna–Verona–Brenner, which is being upgraded, meets here the railway connection between the Adriatic and Tyrrhenian seas. Road and rail offer different reference points for your journey; for specific plans, match your connection to your chosen travel date.
