Castel Goffredo: City History and Tortello Amaro
Accommodation in Castel Goffredo
If you are planning a trip to Castel Goffredo, the city’s history and local food culture can provide a thematic framework. The park garden at Tenuta S. Apollonio adds a garden of a clearly stated size to these themes. The places and dates give you different points of reference for shaping your stay around culture, gardens or events.
City History at MAST
MAST Castel Goffredo presents the city’s art and history from the Lombard period to the end of the 16th century. This makes the museum visit a focus on a clearly defined, yet wide-ranging, period. If you are interested in the history of the place, this span provides a specific focus for planning your trip. The visitor route is also an important planning consideration: the exhibition route is fully accessible and has no architectural barriers. A lift from the ground floor provides access to floors 1 and 2. The city’s accessibility information was updated in September 2024. If this is an important consideration for your plans, check the current situation before your visit.
Historical Landmarks on Piazza Mazzini
Two distinct historical themes can be explored on Piazza Mazzini. The Prepositurale di Sant’Erasmo Vescovo e Martire was built within the walls of Castel Goffredo in the second half of the 16th century and is located on this square. The church houses the 15th-century wooden Crocifisso Miracoloso. Palazzo Gonzaga-Acerbi occupies the entire north side of the square and served as the residence of Castel Goffredo’s successive rulers. In 1511, it became the residence of Marquis Aloisio Gonzaga. He made Castel Goffredo the capital of a fief that also included Castiglione and Solferino. Thus, the square brings together architectural history and sacred art alongside the history of residences and rule. This distinction helps you consider the historic sites according to their respective themes, rather than seeing them merely as separate names on a list.
A Garden as a Different Local Focus
The park garden at Tenuta S. Apollonio covers more than 70,000 square metres. This area gives the place a distinct and clearly defined scale. Unlike the historical landmarks on Piazza Mazzini, the focus here is a garden. If you divide your trip according to different interests, the city’s history and the garden can serve as two separate thematic focuses.
Tortello Amaro and Recurring Dates
Tortello amaro connects local food culture with a specifically named herb: the filling contains Erba di San Pietro, scientifically known as Tanacetum balsamita and also referred to as Chrysanthemum balsamita or Balsamita major. Tortello amaro is considered a traditional dish of Castel Goffredo, and its origins are also considered ancient. This makes the dish a tangible culinary point of reference for the town.
The Festa del Tortello Amaro is a separate event from the dish: it has been held on the third weekend of June since its first edition on 15 June 1996. The dish represents a culinary tradition, while the festival adds a recurring date in the annual calendar. If you would like to plan your trip around the Festa, check the date of the particular edition before booking.
Another event is Libri sotto i portici, a second-hand book market that Castel Goffredo has held since 2011. It takes place monthly, on the first Sunday. The two events therefore follow different schedules: the book market returns every month, while the Festa del Tortello Amaro is tied to the third weekend of June. These dates can help you choose your travel dates around an event. Check the current event date if you are planning your trip around it.
