Revere: Museum, Architectural History and River Excursions
Accommodation in Revere
Revere Between the Po and Architectural History
Revere combines the history of the Po with several distinctive buildings. The Museo del Po focuses on the river and the people on its banks; the Palazzo Ducale, the Torre campanaria and the Beata Vergine Annunziata each offer different architectural and historical perspectives. For planning, you can choose between three areas of interest: the exhibition about the Po, architectural history and seasonal river excursions.
At the Museo del Po: The River, Its People and Archaeology
The Museo del Po is located in the Palazzo Ducale in Piazza Castello in Revere. It is an ethnographic and anthropological museum devoted entirely to the Po River. The museum route is divided into eleven rooms, covering the history of the river and its surrounding area, its wildlife, occupations associated with it, and the relationship between the Po and the people on its banks. In this way, nature, work and human life come together under the same museum theme. An archaeological section complements the tour with finds dating from prehistory to the post-medieval period. It broadens the perspective on the Po by adding a long historical dimension alongside the themes of the river area and occupations.
Palazzo Ducale: Defensive Structure and Architecture
The Palazzo Ducale was built between 1444 and 1478 at the request of Ludovico II, based on the defensive system of the island of Revere, which consisted of seven towers. Its form also provides concrete points of reference for architectural comparison: the C-shaped floor plan encloses a courtyard. There is a portico on the ground floor, in which Brunelleschi's influence has been noted. The building therefore offers a way to consider both its historical defensive context and its floor plan, courtyard and portico. Those interested in architecture can examine these aspects separately, rather than considering the Palazzo only in terms of when it was built.
Historic Buildings from Different Periods
Other buildings offer different historical perspectives. The surviving Torre campanaria belonged to a fortress dating from 1125 and was once used to monitor shipping on the Po. The Beata Vergine Annunziata offers a different historical reference point: it is a late Baroque building constructed between 1750 and 1775 over a church dating from 1472. The Oratorio di San Biagio in Zello is another religious building and the oldest religious building in Revere. Together, these historical reference points span the former fortress context and late Baroque church architecture. Building style, former function and construction date offer distinct ways to explore the history of these buildings.
Planning Seasonal River Excursions
The Po itself is another reason to visit. From spring through September, the landing stages in Revere allow cruise ships to make stopovers and local motorboats to offer river excursions to Mantua and Venice. These options differ: cruise ships make stopovers, while local motorboats offer river excursions. If a trip is important to your plans, check the latest dates in advance. The seasonal period may be an important factor in planning your visit and distinguishes this option from exploring the museum and architectural history.
