Medole appeals to travelers who want to connect their stay with art, architectural history and traces of the battle. In the historic town center, religious artworks, the Civica Raccolta d’Arte and the Torrione Gonzaghesco offer different ways to explore the town’s history. When planning your trip, consider whether you want to focus mainly on art and architecture, or also on the historic battlefield.

Tower, castle and historic town center

The Torrione Gonzaghesco is the only surviving element of the original medieval castle. Castello Castrum Medulae was built between 1010 and 1020 and expanded in the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries under the rule of the Gonzaga family, which lasted from 1404 to 1691. The town center’s distinctive square layout also recalls the castle. The Torrione is 26 meters high; above a height of eight meters from the ground, it is enclosed on three sides.

The historic center also includes austere Baroque palaces dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. Their elegant marble portals are considered a distinctive architectural feature of Medole. Those interested in the town’s development can also visit Palazzo Scaratti–Minelli: this historic 18th-century noble residence is connected with the history of the Risorgimento in Medole.

Another way to explore the town’s history is through the Civica Raccolta d’Arte. It is housed in the Torre gonzaghesca complex, the last surviving evidence of the ancient Castrum Medulae. The collection includes paintings, graphic works, prints and sculptures, mostly by artists from Mantua. Their works span from the early years of the 20th century to the present day. The collection’s listed Sunday opening hours are 09:00 to 12:30 and 15:00 to 19:00; this schedule has been in effect since January 1, 2025. Check it before your trip.

Churches and artworks

Architectural history and painting come together in the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta. The church was built in the second half of the 16th century and remodeled in 1750 to a design by Paolo Soratini. Its artworks include a 15th-century terracotta depiction of the Compianto, created by Guido Mazzoni, also known as Modanino or Paganino. The church also houses Titian’s altarpiece “Cristo Risorto che appare alla Madre,” depicting the risen Christ appearing to his mother.

The Pieve di Santa Maria offers a different art-historical point of interest. It dates from the 11th century and has Romanesque features. Inside, frescoes dating to the beginning of the 15th century have been preserved. This allows you to choose between a collection featuring works in various media, an altarpiece and older frescoes.

The Convento dell’Annunciata also brings together architectural and local history. Its origins date back to 1455, when a private chapel, together with a house and garden, was donated to the Augustinian Hermits. The convent has typical features of the late Gothic Po Valley. Parts of the cloister with frescoes have been restored by the owners.

Traces of the battle and events

Those interested in the Battle of Medole can explore the route “24 GIUGNO 1859. LA BATTAGLIA NELLA PIANA.” It is about six kilometers long and runs through the central section of the former Medole battlefield. Monte Medolano is another historical point of interest: it rises to 92 meters above sea level and served as a lookout point for Marshal Patrice de MacMahon during the battle. The route and elevation describe different aspects of the battle’s history.

Medole’s events calendar focuses on music and entertainment and also features traditional food and wine culture. Individual events may vary; check the dates when planning a specific trip. You can then choose your hotel based on the themes that interest you most during your stay—art and architecture, local history or an event date.
