The Rocca and its architectural history

The Castello e Rocca di Castel d'Ario consists of a single walled enclosure with an irregular polygonal layout. Its shape follows the former courses of the Molinella to the south and the Essere to the north; both waterways were straightened at the end of the 15th century. The layout thus links the form of the complex to a change in the waterways. The inner keep includes a fifth tower called the Torre della Fame. The piano nobile of the Castello e Rocca di Castel d'Ario contains coats of arms of the Scaliger family. These offer two ways of understanding the site: the link with the waterways explains the form of the entire enclosure, while the Torre della Fame and the Scaliger coats of arms draw attention to individual features.

Church, convent and art

At the Parrocchia dell’Assunzione della Beata Vergine Maria, the design and the artwork can be considered separately: Gerolamo dal Pozzo di Villagrossa designed the church, while its apse contains three altarpieces by Giandomenico Cignaroli. The apse is the section at the end of the church interior; this brings a specific location for the artworks into focus alongside the architect’s name. At the EX CONVENTO DOMENICANO „CONDOMINIO IL CONVENTINO“, the patron and the architect are central: Count Paolo Emilio Gonzaga of the House of Gonzaga di Novellara commissioned the building in 1614, and Antonio Maria Viani designed it. Tazio Nuvolari: biography and monument

Nuvolari’s biographical connection and the monument are distinct: Tazio Nuvolari was born in Castel Dʼario, and the Monumento a Tazio Nuvolari is dedicated to the racing car and motorcycle driver. If you explore places through the people associated with them, the birthplace connection here is paired with an explicit tribute. The Monumento is freely accessible from the road and has no architectural barriers.

Rice-growing landscape and local traditions

Castel Dʼario lies in the water-rich Po Valley, where Vialone Nano rice is grown. The town is also part of the Strada del Riso, the rice route. These offer two different perspectives on the same regional context: cultivation reflects the agricultural character of the area, while the route connects it with a wider rice theme. Riso alla Pilota De.C.O. was presented in May 2010 as part of the Festa del Risotto and recognized through a specific resolution of the municipal council.
