Castellucchio between cultural history and cycling routes
Accommodation in Castellucchio
Castellucchio lies between the Oglio and Mincio rivers, in a flat, fertile landscape in the central Mantuan area. The Osone also runs through the municipal area. Alongside these connections to the rivers, the town’s history is reflected in a museum, a parish church, the Teatro SOMS and the surviving tower of the medieval castle.
Collections and church art
The Museo delle Armi Fosco Baboni houses several collections. They were donated by private individuals from the municipality and include items of considerable historical and artistic value. The museum thus combines a local connection through the donations with a glimpse of objects of historical and artistic value.
For visitors who cannot use the tower’s old stairs, a video offering a virtual museum tour is available in a dedicated room.
The Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Giorgio martire dates back to 1790 and was built over an earlier, smaller place of worship. Its apse contains a painting by the artist Felice Campi. The building’s history and the painting offer two different points of interest: the church was built over an earlier place of worship, and it contains a specific, named work of art.
Traces of different eras
Castellucchio Castle dates back to around the year 1000 and was enlarged by the Gonzaga family. Only one tower remains. The Teatro SOMS was built between 1864 and 1870. In chronological terms, the church and theatre are more recent landmarks; both came well after the medieval castle, and the theatre was built later than the church.
Cycling route and cultural events
The GP03 – Tra Oglio e Mincio cycling route connects the area along the Oglio River with the Destra Mincio cycle path and leads to Castellucchio railway station. The start of the cycle path, which leads into Castellucchio, can be reached via Via Pilone. While the geographical reference describes the town’s location, GP03 identifies a specific cycling route and the railway station as its destination.
The Biblioteca Comunale organises several game nights in collaboration with the Rete Bibliotecaria Mantovana and the Amici Ludici. They include board games, escape games, Magic tournaments and Dungeons & Dragons. The programme ranges from social games and puzzles to tournaments and role-playing sessions. These formats therefore differ from the historical themes of the churches, castle and theatre.
The Settimana Castellucchiese takes place every year. The 2026 edition ran from 25 June to 5 July and included cultural and social evenings in the main town of Castellucchio and its hamlets. It complements the permanent cultural landmarks with an event that involved different parts of the municipality.
This gives you a range of themes to consider when planning your trip: the buildings and collections take you through different historical periods, while GP03 provides a cycling link between the area along the Oglio, the Destra Mincio and Castellucchio. Game nights and the annual Settimana add cultural and social events to the picture.
