Sermide brings together evidence of its architectural and local history with the landscape along the Po River. For travelers choosing a destination based on their interests, two distinct themes take center stage: cultural history and nature. These include the Gonzaga Tower, churches from different eras, the Teleferica, as well as a recognized park, a wetland oasis and paths along the Po embankments.

Gonzaga History and Church Architecture

La Torre, the Gonzaga Tower, is the only surviving tower of the citadel. The citadel was built by the Municipality of Mantua around the year 1000 and fortified by Ludovico Gonzaga after 1370. The tower bears an elegant, recently restored terracotta coat of arms of the Gonzaga family. La Torre thus highlights both the history of the citadel and a specific architectural detail.

The parish church of Saints Peter and Paul offers a different architectural emphasis. The Neo-Gothic building was constructed between 1865 and 1871. It has three naves and measures 65 meters long, 27 meters wide and 21 meters high. Its construction period, style and dimensions provide concrete points of reference for understanding the church’s history and architecture.

East of Sermide, on the right bank of the Po, stands the Capuchin church. It is the surviving part of a monastery founded in 1650 and contains a Rococo-era tabernacle. Together with the parish church, it represents two distinct religious and historical contexts: a remnant of a 17th-century monastery and a 19th-century Neo-Gothic building.

Industrial History on the Po

The Teleferica is a rare example of industrial archaeology on the Po. Originally, it was part of a facility supplied across the river and used to transport coal and other materials to the now-disused sugar factory. Its history is therefore distinct from that of the churches and the citadel: here, the focus is on the river’s industrial use. Cultural gatherings are held in the Teleferica hall, which is located on the Po.

Park, Wetland and Trails

Parco Golenale del Gruccione is classified as a “Parco Locale di Interesse Sovracomunale” (Local Park of Supra-Municipal Interest) and was recognized in 2005. It is located in Lombardy, in the municipality of Sermide. In summer, the Po embankments in the park are used for walks; this seasonal use is one of the local ways to experience the landscape on foot.

The Digagnola Nature Oasis covers 17 hectares between the Argine Maestro and the Argine Golenale. The strip of land extends in the direction of the municipality of Felonica; vegetation and fauna typical of wetlands are concentrated there. The oasis can be reached by bicycle via the “Digagnola bike” route, which starts on Via Argine Po. Sermide also has scenic walking and cycling routes along the Po embankments.

Choosing Sermide Based on Your Interests

If you are weighing cultural history against the landscape when choosing a destination, Sermide offers both. La Torre and the churches represent different architectural and historical periods; the Teleferica adds a perspective on the river’s former industrial use. The park, Digagnola and the embankment routes, by contrast, bring nature and outdoor activities to the fore. This can help you decide which focus you would most like to shape your stay.
