Religious Gonzaga heritage, the history of the Red Cross and a protected moraine landscape give Castiglione Delle Stiviere a range of cultural and scenic facets. If you are looking for a hotel in Castiglione Delle Stiviere, you can plan your trip around the topics that interest you most: sacred art and family history, humanitarian history, or landscapes and trails.

Gonzaga Heritage and Religious History

In 1964, Pope Paul VI elevated the Basilica Santuario di San Luigi Gonzaga to the status of a minor basilica. The basilica houses a relic of Saint Aloysius Gonzaga and is also a pilgrimage destination. The relic and its connection to pilgrimage make the sanctuary a distinct point of interest in the town’s religious history.

The Museo Aloisiano complements this theme with important works of sacred art associated with the saint. The collection also includes a significant portrait cycle of the Gonzaga family from the younger branch of the family represented in Castiglione. Thus, the sanctuary focuses on the relic and pilgrimage, while the museum brings together sacred art and family portraits. Advance reservations are required to visit the Museo Aloisiano; a guided tour is provided.

Red Cross History and Art

The Museo Internazionale della Croce Rossa opened on 24 June 1959 at Palazzo Longhi, exactly a century after the Battle of Solferino. The museum’s exhibits cover the subject from its origins to the present day and explore humanitarian work. A specific historical document complements this broad theme: the museum preserves the original text of Henry Dunant’s 1862 book, “Un ricordo di Solferino.” The story of the museum’s opening and the book it preserves offer distinct points of reference in time.

The gallery in Palazzo Menghini offers another artistic focus. Its permanent exhibition, “Segno e identità di una Comunità. Grandi artisti del Novecento castiglionese,” presents artists from Castiglione who worked in the 20th century. While the Museo Aloisiano features sacred works and Gonzaga portraits, the gallery focuses on a dedicated exhibition about the community and 20th-century art.

Moraine Landscape and Trails

The SIC Complesso Morenico di Castiglione delle Stiviere covers 115.75 hectares within the town. The habitats described include holm oak woods on the slopes and riverside willow woods. They also include remnants of dry grasslands on predominantly south-facing, sunny, steep slopes, as well as the Valle wetland with its riverside and marsh vegetation. Wooded slopes, drier grassland and wetland vegetation therefore characterize different parts of this natural area.

The SIC can be accessed via hiking trails and local roads. As a distinct route, the Mantuan section of the Via Carolingia begins in Castiglione Delle Stiviere, crosses the moraine hills and continues to the Convento di Santa Maria. The protected area and the route offer different ways to experience the landscape: one is characterized by its habitats, the other by its course over the hills to the stated destination.

Convento di Santa Maria: Layers of History

The Convento di Santa Maria was built in the 16th century as a country house for the Gonzaga family. Luigi Gonzaga withdrew there to pray in 1584. A black-and-white mosaic floor dating from the 1st or 2nd century AD has also been rediscovered at the convent’s Roman villa. This archaeological trace dates from a period earlier than the building’s later history.

The Roman villa includes a circular underground chamber with an ancient spring. It is about six metres in diameter and is considered a thermal room. The mosaic and underground chamber point to different features of the villa: the rediscovered floor and a room whose approximate size and spring have been recorded. Together with the Gonzaga country house and Luigi Gonzaga’s retreat for prayer, these details offer several clearly distinct historical points of reference.
