The Renaissance and the city’s history

Mantova and Sabbioneta are exceptional examples of urban planning, architectural and artistic achievements of the Renaissance, associated with the ideas and influence of the ruling Gonzaga family. Mantova itself bears traces of Roman times. In the 15th and 16th centuries, the city was renewed through water-management, urban-planning and architectural works. According to tradition, the legionnaire Longinus collected the blood together with earth from Golgotha. Here, precisely attributed building history meets a religious tradition. The Rotonda di San Lorenzo offers a different architectural note: it is a rare example of Romanesque architecture in the Po Valley. Its circular plan, ambulatory and matroneum define the building; contemporary frescoes adorn the Rotonda.

The Teatro Scientifico Bibiena

The Teatro Scientifico Bibiena was built between 1767 and 1769, primarily for scientific gatherings; it was also open for theatre performances and concerts. The Mincio, cycling route and arrival

Mantova is surrounded on three sides by artificial lakes formed by the Mincio. It runs along the Mincio embankments and artificial canals, entirely on a dedicated cycle and pedestrian path within the Parco Regionale del Mincio. Check the route conditions before setting out.
