Goito lies in the middle and lower Po Plain and is shaped by the landscape of the Mincio. Country roads, canals, irrigation ditches, rows of trees and hedgerows run through the plain. Themes for a stay range from the Mincio landscape and walks to architecture, the history of technology and the remembrance of historical events.

Green Landscapes and Paths

Centro Parco Bertone is a romantic landscaped garden with exotic and native trees that can be up to 150 years old. The grounds are shaped by woodland, charming views and a small lake, and offer walks amid greenery. Before planning a visit, check the park’s current access arrangements.

For a cycling trip, the Mantova–Peschiera route describes a course from Marengo towards Goito to the Pozzolo–Maglio diversion canal. It then follows the left-bank path to Peschiera. The route therefore includes a section towards Goito as well as a further destination on Lake Garda.

Another route description covers the third stage: it starts at the Monumento al Bersagliere in Goito, near the Ponte della Gloria, and follows the Mincio through the Bosco degli Arimanni to Sacca. Route descriptions and trail conditions may change, so check the current route before setting out.

Buildings and History

The Torre Civica Goito is a medieval tower with four floors and a height of 22.40 metres. Access is permitted only during events. If you would like to visit the tower, check in advance whether a suitable event is scheduled.

The Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Pietro Apostolo is a Baroque church. Construction began in 1729 and was completed in 1734. In the central part of the church is a large painting by Giuseppe Bazzani: it depicts Christ handing the keys to Saint Peter and was created in 1739. The dates make clear the sequence of the church’s construction and the painting.

The Vecchi Mulini ad Acqua on the Mincio date from the early 17th century. The historic equipment also includes the surviving paddles that once powered the millstones.

The Monumento al Granatiere was inaugurated on 30 May 1998. It commemorates the victorious Battle of Goito, fought on 30 May 1848 on the Mincio near the Ponte della Gloria. The bridge was a strategically important river crossing and was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt over the centuries. Villa Giraffa stands on the banks of the Mincio beside the Ponte della Gloria and brings together, in an eclectic way, different architectural styles from the 15th to the 20th century.

The Necropoli di Strada Calliera in Sacca di Goito is also part of the area’s archaeological heritage. An early section of the cemetery dates from the Gothic period and comprises 38 ground-level inhumation graves with rich grave goods. This oldest section of the cemetery from the Gothic period stands apart from Goito’s architectural and technological heritage.

Goito is also associated with a local tradition: according to the story, the Sordello family’s estate corresponds to what is now Corte Sereno, north of Parco Moschini and not far from the hamlet of Torre. This identification remains a local tradition. In Torre di Goito, the Sagra del Pit is also associated with the first day of Lent as a traditional village festival. The tradition was interrupted for a time; dates and programmes may vary. So check whether a festival date has been announced for your stay.
