Canneto Sull'oglio can be explored through several distinct themes: the town’s history, its museums and collections, and a section of the Ciclovia dell’Oglio. The highlights range from nature and the history of the area between two rivers to toys, church art and Gonzaga buildings. When planning your visit, you can decide whether to focus mainly on collections, architectural history or a cycling stage.

Museums and collections

The Museo Civico is housed in a representative former school building dating from the late 19th century on Piazza Gramsci. It is home to the Centro Visite del Parco Oglio Sud, with displays on local flora and fauna as well as sound trails for children. The Ecomuseo Oglio-Chiese focuses on a different theme: it is dedicated to the area between the two rivers, its history and culture, and the people who lived and worked there in the past. While the Centro Visite explores local natural history, the Ecomuseo focuses on the human history and way of life in the area between the Oglio and Chiese rivers.

The Collezione del giocattolo Giulio Superti Furga displays hundreds of dolls and toys from different periods and made from various materials. Most of the pieces were made in Canneto Sull'oglio. The collection therefore offers two clear perspectives: the chronological variety of the objects and their different materials. Its local connection lies in the fact that most were made in Canneto. This gives it a different focus from the Ecomuseum’s themes or the town’s architectural history: here, toys and their material and chronological variety take centre stage.

Church, art and Gonzaga history

Canneto’s nursery-gardening tradition dates back to the 18th century. At the time, the town was known for producing mulberry trees for transplanting. This history adds an economic aspect to the architectural heritage: alongside the church and castle, the town’s past also includes a tradition of plant production.

The Chiesa Parrocchiale di Sant’Antonio Abate, a former collegiate church, was built towards the end of the 14th century. Inside is a near-life-size wooden Sepolcro group attributed to the sculptor Clemente Zamara. The Torre Civica is the last surviving remnant of the old Gonzaga castle. The church combines architectural history with a specific work of art; the Torre Civica is distinct from it as the last surviving remnant of the old Gonzaga castle.

Events and when to visit

If you are planning a visit around an event, you can choose between two dates in the annual calendar: the Festa del Luartis takes place on the third Sunday in May, and the Borsa Scambio del giocattolo d’epoca e di modernariato on the last Sunday in September. The two events therefore take place at different times of the year. Before travelling, check the exact dates and programme for the relevant year if you want to plan your stay around either event.

The Ciclovia dell’Oglio

The fourth stage of the Ciclovia dell’Oglio connects Ostiano with San Matteo delle Chiaviche on the left bank of the Oglio River and follows the riverside roads of the Parco Regionale Oglio Sud. In Canneto Sull'oglio, the Museo del Giocattolo Superti Furga and the Ecomuseo Valli Oglio Chiese make suitable stops along the way. Comparing the two stops can help you choose according to your interests: one focuses on dolls and toys, while the other explores the history and culture of the area between the Oglio and Chiese. This way, you can combine the route with a visit to a collection or a focus on regional history.
