The provincial nature and archaeology trail offers a distinctive choice for planning your visit: you can follow it chronologically, from prehistory to the 15th or 16th century, or geographically, from north to south. The Sistema Museale della Provincia di Lecco (Lecco Provincial Museum System) has created a walking route linking important historical and cultural sites across the area. It is available as a continuous GPX route and with an illustrated map, making it easy to navigate and use. Before setting out, check that you have the latest version of the map, as route documentation may be updated.

Trails and landscapes

The Sentiero del Viandante passes through historic villages and rural architecture, by old mills, castles and quiet country churches. The trail often crosses the Lecco–Colico–Sondrio railway line. This lets you walk individual stages and take the train back to your starting point. If you plan to do this, check the current train timetable before your trip.

The Anello dei Laghi starts in the center of Lecco and follows the Adda River to Pescarenico. This circular cycling and walking route is about 20 kilometers long and runs along the Adda between the lakes of Garlate and Olginate. The route is mostly flat, suitable for families and designed for a half-day or full-day outing in any season. You can walk or cycle it. This gives you a different planning option from a stage of the Sentiero del Viandante: on the Anello, you can choose between a half-day and a full day, while on the Sentiero you can link individual sections with a return by train.

The garden of Villa Monastero now stretches along the lakeshore, with a waterfront of almost two kilometers. In Parco Monte Barro, 44 kilometers of well-marked trails lead to the park’s main attractions. Its landscape includes rocky cliffs and grasslands with particularly rich flora, including rare and endemic plants.

Piani Resinelli lies at an altitude of about 1,300 meters in Parco delle Grigne, at the foot of the Grigne mountains. From there, views extend from the Rhaetian Alps to Monte Rosa, across Lecco and the Lecco branch of Lake Como to the plain; on clear days, you can also see Milan’s skyline. Piani Resinelli is the starting point for numerous trails, from easy family walks to more technically demanding routes. Artavaggio offers trekking, mountain biking, skiing, ski touring, a fun park and snowshoeing. Available activities may vary by season.

Museums and history

Ca’ Martì combines the subject of construction work with an archaeological learning trail featuring 16 stops in the surrounding area. The museum documents the history, life and work of the masons of Carenno and Val San Martino. Forte Montecchio offers a different perspective on history: it is a World War I fortress carved into the rock. Its features include massive walls made of dressed granite, a powder magazine more than 60 meters deep and four Schneider cannons.

The Museo delle Grigne documents the development of the Esino area through Alpine and Pre-Alpine minerals, Triassic fossils, ethnographic objects, and weapons and jewelry from ancient tombs. An archaeological site with a Gothic settlement dating from the 5th to 6th centuries AD is also open to visitors. There, visitors can see the remains of a fortified structure built in the late Roman Empire. The Torre di Maggiana, also known as the “Torre del Barbarossa,” dates from the 12th century; all five of its floors are open to visitors.

Palazzo Belgiojoso houses the Natural History Museum, the Archaeological Museum, the Historical Museum and the Civico Planetario. Visitors can explore the economic, social and environmental history of the Lecco area, from the Paleolithic to the present day. The Civico Museo della Seta Abegg preserves machinery from disused silk mills, much of which still works. The collection is officially recognized as a museum collection by the Lombardy Region.

For a trip focused on history and culture, consider whether you would rather follow a themed trail or set aside time for collections and buildings. You can follow the provincial trail chronologically or from north to south; each museum has its own focus, from natural history and archaeology to silk processing. This lets you plan your days around the subjects that interest you most.
