Calolziocorte combines sacred architectural heritage with an extensive wetland, a botanical garden, and a calendar of events with a variety of dates. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, you can first consider whether you want to focus on culture, nature, or a particular event. These themes are easy to distinguish: Lavello represents historical and religious connections, while the Palude di Brivio is a protected natural area.

Nature between the wetland and the botanical garden

The SIC Palude di Brivio covers 302 hectares and lies within the municipalities of Calolziocorte, Monte Marenzo, Brivio, and Cisano Bergamasco. The entire area lies within the boundaries of Parco Adda Nord. The Palude is home to one of the few populations of the European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis) in the Upper Lombardy plain. This means that both a clearly defined protected area and a rare population of this species are highlights here.

A different scale is offered by the Giardino Botanico di Villa De Ponti in Calolziocorte: the botanical garden covers one hectare and is home to around 500 different plant species. Comparing their sizes helps put the two nature attractions in perspective: 302 hectares for the Palude di Brivio and one hectare for the garden. When planning your visit, you can therefore choose between an extensive protected area and a botanical collection, without treating the two places as the same kind of nature experience.

Via Lago Vecchio provides access to the Palude di Brivio. Check current conditions before visiting.

Churches and history in Lavello

The Santuario di Santa Maria del Lavello was built by the Servite friars around the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries. It is also a stop on the international cultural and religious Cloister Route (Strada dei Chiostri). Its construction period and place on the route offer two different perspectives on the sanctuary: its origins in the late Middle Ages and its inclusion in an international cultural route.

The Chiesa di San Lorenzo Vecchio is another of Calolziocorte’s notable historic churches. It is an example of medieval architecture and preserves an extensive fresco cycle. A different architectural description applies to the Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo in Foppenico: a note dated May 20, 1844, describes it as an octagonal temple. For a thematic overview, this sets medieval architecture and frescoes alongside a historical description of an octagonal form.

The year 1014 is also recorded in connection with Lavello, when it was referred to as a “castello” (castle). Together with the construction period of the Santuario, this provides two widely separated historical reference points: the term used in 1014 and the construction of the sanctuary around the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries. The year 1014 refers to the designation used at the time.

Cycling and walking route, and event dates

The “La ciclopedonale dei laghi di Garlate e Olginate” is about 18 kilometres long. Alongside the churches and botanical garden, the route is another distinct theme to consider when planning your trip.

The events have different dates and offerings. The Fiera Del Lavello takes place on the second Sunday in September in Parco Martiri delle Foibe, on the shores of the Lavello. The Mercatino dell’Antico Monastero takes place in Parco Martiri delle Foibe on the second Sunday of every month from March to November. The Fera di „Pomm“ is held on December 8 in Centro/Casale, where fruit and confectionery are sold. If an event or market day is important to your trip, check the current schedule in advance.

Calolziocorte therefore offers a range of ways to plan a stay: protected nature and botanical diversity, churches with their own historical connections, and a cycling and walking route about 18 kilometres long. The market and event dates add specific occasions throughout the year.
