Maggio Between the Church and Mountain Trails

Maggio brings together a parish church featuring works by several artists and routes to a range of destinations. For trip planning, the trails can be distinguished by their routes and landscapes: a loop through several hamlets, a route to the pastures of Culmine di San Pietro, and the trail over Zucco di Desio to the summit of Monte Due Mani. Maggio therefore offers specific points of interest for both cultural and hiking interests.

Parish Church and Art

The parish church of Natività della Beata Vergine in Maggio di Cremeno dates to the 17th century. It houses frescoes by Romeo Rivetta and Arturo Galli, paintings by Giancarlo Vitali, sculptures by Enrico Manfrini, and a modern organ made by the Mascioni company. Visitors interested in sacred art can make the church a focus in its own right, alongside the scenic trails.

Hikes by Destination and Route

The “Anello basso Maggio/ Valle Desio” loop starts and ends in Maggio. It passes through Tonalli di Sopra, Valle Dongoli, Valle Desio, Canale Guzzi, and Fonte di S. Lorenzo before returning to Tonali di Sopra. Classified as a tourist trail, it has an elevation gain of 166 m and takes one hour. Starting and ending in Maggio, the named hamlets provide a clear overview of the route. The stated duration and elevation gain help with planning your time; conditions on mountain trails may vary.

The “Anello da Maggio alla Culmine di San Pietro” loop starts in Maggio at the Fontana di San Lorenzo. It follows a mostly unpaved road through the hamlet of Ussola to the pass pastures. While the Anello basso passes through several named hamlets, this trail leads to the landscape around the pass. It can be extended as far as Piani di Artavaggio.

Another route leads from the hamlet of Casere in Maggio over Monte Tabor and along the hamlet of La Foppa to Zucco di Desio at 1,651 m. From there, the trail follows a scenic ridge to the summit of Monte Due Mani. The pre-Alpine landscape is characterized by pastures and beech and birch forests. Maggio is recommended as a starting point for Monte Due Mani. The Bivacco Locatelli, with its domed, igloo-like shape, is a landmark on the summit. The route described thus connects specific waypoints with the ridge and summit.

By Bicycle and Across the Ponte della Vittoria

There is also a dedicated cycling option: the SI-C D14S-B route is entirely accessible by bicycle and descends through the Valle del Torrente Ferrera in the direction of Maggio. Its direction toward the village distinguishes it from the hiking trails described to the pass and summit; route conditions may vary.

The Ponte della Vittoria offers another point of reference. It leads to the hamlet of Maggio and crosses the Torrente Pioverna at a height of 96 m. Together, the bridge, sacred art, and the different trail destinations help visitors find their way during a stay in Maggio.
