Get to know Introbio through several specific themes: the Falesie di Introbio climbing area, the footpath to the Cascata della Troggia, the annual pilgrimage to Madonna della Neve, and its natural and cultural heritage. When planning your trip, first consider what matters most: a climbing excursion, the August date, or your interest in church architecture and art. Each place and feature offers a different focus for your stay.

Climbing and outdoor trails

Falesie di Introbio is a climbing area with routes graded from 2a to 8c. This range of grades offers a specific point of comparison if climbing is part of your reason for travelling. Plan according to the stated difficulty grade and check the current condition of each route before climbing. The Falesie can be reached from the cycle and footpath by crossing the bridge over the Pioverna and then turning right onto an unpaved road.

The footpath to the Cascata della Troggia, by contrast, starts in the village of I Forni in Introbio. This makes it easy to distinguish the directions for the two destinations: I Forni is the starting point for the waterfall, while the route to the climbing area follows the cycle and footpath, crosses the Pioverna bridge, and continues along the unpaved road. If you plan to visit both, you can take the directions for each separately into account.

A tradition with a set date

Every year on 5 August, locals from Introbio, residents of Valsassina and tourists undertake the pilgrimage to Madonna della Neve as an act of religious devotion. This keeps an old tradition alive. If the pilgrimage is the main reason for your trip, include the date in your plans and check the information for the relevant year before travelling. Unlike the directions to the Falesie and the Cascata, the annual calendar date is the key point of reference here.

Il Faggio and Villa Migliavacca

The garden of Villa Migliavacca is home to the green monument Il Faggio di Introbio. The tree is over 20 metres tall, has a circumference of four metres and a diameter of 125 centimetres. These figures compare its height and trunk measurements, giving a concrete sense of its size. The villa is distinguished by brick façades interspersed with graffiti, placing a natural monument and an architectural feature side by side as distinct points of interest. If you would like to visit the garden, check the park’s current opening hours in advance.

San Michele: architecture and art

The church of San Michele in Introbio is documented as early as the 13th century. It has a single-nave hall with a vaulted ceiling, a rectangular apse and two side chapels. “Single-nave” describes a layout with one main nave; the apse and side chapels add the terminating and side areas. San Michele also houses a 15th-century four-part altarpiece depicting the Madonna and Saints Anthony Abbot and Gottardo. The dates refer to different aspects: the church’s early documentation and the period when the altarpiece was created. The architecture, historical context and artwork therefore offer different ways to understand San Michele.
