Cremeno lies in the Orobic Pre-Alps, surrounded by natural landscapes. When looking for a hotel in Cremeno, your choice of location may also depend on whether you are especially interested in mountain scenery and trails or in historical landmarks. Pastures, forests, rocks and rivers shape the landscape of the municipality; churches, bridges and former rural settlements offer glimpses into its history.

Landscapes and Trails Around Cremeno

The area includes flowering pastures, beech and birch forests, rocks, and rivers that run through the valleys. The mountain trails range from easy mule tracks to routes at relatively low elevations. Several trails can be combined into different hikes. Check trail conditions locally before setting out on a hike.

A loop trail starts in Maggio, in the Fontana di San Lorenzo area, and follows mostly unpaved paths to the pastures at the Culmine di San Pietro pass. The Anello Cremeno/Maggio follows historic routes used by residents before the Ponte della Vittoria was built in 1925 and, before that, crossed by a metal rope bridge. The route therefore combines a walk through the landscape with a glimpse of the former connections between the settlements.

For an e-MTB ride, consider the trail from Forcella di Olino to Culmine di San Pietro: it can be ridden in both directions and connects with other trails leading to Piani di Artavaggio. These details distinguish two specific options: a mostly unpaved loop from Maggio to the pastures, and an e-MTB trail with connections toward Piani di Artavaggio.

Monte Due Mani is 1,666 metres high. A large cross and an igloo-shaped bivouac stand at its summit.

Churches, Bridges and Local History

The church of Santa Maria Nascente stands in Maggio, an area of Cremeno. It was built between 1680 and 1683 and blessed in 1684. In 1905, the painter Rivetta expanded and decorated the church. Its current peal of five bells dates from 1948. These dates trace its development over several centuries, from construction to later additions.

San Giorgio in Cremeno also brings together historical landmarks from different periods. After Cardinal Federico Borromeo’s pastoral visit in 1614, the ancient church on the Valsassina plateau was supposed to be demolished and rebuilt. The chapels of the Stations of the Cross, built in 1772, stand outside the church. Since 1836, the San Rocco procession has taken place every year on 16 August, travelling from the parish church of San Giorgio Martire to the church of San Rocco.

The Ponte della Vittoria is 75 metres long, 96 metres high and 5 metres wide. An inscription commemorates those who fell in the First World War. When the bridge was strengthened in 1984, its original architectural features were preserved. Its dimensions, commemorative inscription and structural alteration make the bridge a distinct part of local history.

The signposted Casali in the municipality include Casale Besozza, Casale Laghetto, Casale Garabuso and Casale Tonalli. Originally, the Casali were functional rural settlements for shepherds, farmers and woodcutters; cheesemaking was one of the main activities carried out there. This history sets the Casali apart from the churches and bridges: they point to the area’s former rural life and work.

The Canale Guzzi is another link between the landscape and history. This ambitious structure was built in 1947 and 1948 in the forest, between streams and torrents, to supply electricity to the Moto Guzzi company in Mandello del Lario. At the historic Fiera di Santa Rosalia, you can sample typical local products. As event plans may change, check the date in advance if you are planning a trip around the Fiera.
