Vendrogno: Hiking and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Vendrogno
Vendrogno is a hamlet in the municipality of Bellano, on the sunny slopes of Monte Muggio, with magnificent views of Lake Como. For travellers looking for a hotel in Vendrogno, hiking trails and the cultural heritage of the Muggiasca are two practical starting points. Trails through the hamlets, churches, chapels, and the ethnographic museum give a stay a range of different focuses.
Hiking and trails
Vendrogno is a starting point for hikes to Monte Muggio, which is 1,799 m high. L’itinerario della memoria follows old paths and connects Bellano and Valsassina via Vendrogno. Hiking trail 08 is also suitable for less experienced hikers who want to explore the relationship between farming culture and religious devotion. The full route of hiking trail 09 begins in Vendrogno at Via per Noceno, leads to the hamlet of Noceno, and is recommended for well-trained hikers. This panoramic hike follows the mountainside above the lake.
The full La transumanza verticale route is intended for well-trained hikers who want to explore a landscape shaped by traditional rural life. The route runs from Sanico through Mosnico and Vendrogno to Ombriaco. The routes offer different highlights: trail 08 combines hiking with farming culture and religious devotion; trail 09 is a panoramic route recommended for well-trained hikers; and La transumanza verticale takes in a landscape shaped by traditional rural life. Check current trail conditions before setting out, as they can vary.
Museums and churches
The MUU Museo del Latte e della Storia della Muggiasca is an ethnographic museum in LocalitĂ Vendrogno, Bellano, housed in a former cooperative dairy. It has six exhibition rooms spread across three floors. The tour presents the individual stages of milk processing. The museum also preserves artefacts and traditions connected with life and material culture in the Muggiasca. It brings together a specific production process and a broader view of life in the Muggiasca.
The bell tower of the Chiesa di San Lorenzo is probably the oldest structure of the church that can still be identified today. The domes above the crossing and the presbytery are decorated with figurative murals. In Sanico, the Chiesa di San Giacomo houses an 18th-century wooden statue of Saint James; the Chiesa di San Sebastiano in Comasira preserves 15th-century paintings. The Chiesa della Madonna della Neve in Vendrogno was built in 1630 following a vow made by the people of Vendrogno who had been spared from the plague. The Museo della Resistenza in Muggiasca is housed in a room next to the sacristy of the Chiesa di San Grato.
Chapels and architectural heritage
A route through the hamlets of Vendrogno leads to 13 chapels dating from different periods. The settlement of Vendrogno, including Bruga, also has 14 portals, mostly round-arched, dating from different periods beginning in the Middle Ages. The chapel route focuses on the hamlets, while the portals stand out for their varied forms and long history.
The Santuario della Madonna di Loreto, commonly known as “La Madonnina,” stands apart from the houses on a rise at the edge of Vendrogno and offers panoramic views. It thus complements the churches and chapels with a distinctive viewpoint in the local cultural landscape.
