Vercurago offers a range of themes to consider when planning a trip: sacred art and pilgrimage history, historic sites, and Lake Garlate. If you are planning a stay here, the individual places to visit can help you decide how to spend your time in the area.

Sanctuary, Chapels and Valletta

The visitor route in Somasca begins at the Basilica, which houses the relics of Saint Jerome. The portico of the Basilica di San Girolamo, with its five arches, opens up a broad view of Somasca and the lake below. Ramps make the Basilica accessible to people with disabilities and to visitors with strollers and wheelchairs.

Along Viale delle Cappelle are ten chapels with wooden statues depicting episodes from the life of Saint Jerome. The route also includes specific figures: the Scala Santa on the avenue has 101 steps. Viale delle Cappelle offers further views of Somasca and the lake. The chapels and the Scala Santa thus provide points of interest in their own right, alongside the Basilica and its portico.

A devotional path leads from the sanctuary to La Valletta and features paintings depicting the life of Saint Jerome. He lived there with his orphans; Valletta is also home to the Church of the Resurrection. The Fonte del miracolo is part of this place too: the spring still provides clear water for pilgrims to drink. Valletta therefore brings together religious history, artworks and a specific place of prayer.

Churches and Local History

The parish church of Saints Gervasius and Protasius is one of the few churches mentioned before the year 1000. Casa Museale Le Sorgenti offers another perspective on local history. It preserves records of the social, historical and religious work of Caterina and Giuditta Cittadini. Mostly original furniture and objects from that period are displayed in a fully preserved historic setting. This complements the religious sites with an insight into the work of the two women and the furnishings of an earlier era.

Rocca dell’Innominato and Literature

The remains of the Rocca dell’Innominato lie on the rocky ridge that forms Vercurago’s northern boundary. The surviving features include a tower with a damaged upper section and parts of the surrounding walls. The site thus combines a striking location with visible traces of the structure. According to tradition, the Rocca was one of Francesco Bernardino Visconti’s residences. Alessandro Manzoni drew inspiration from Visconti for the character of the Innominato in I Promessi Sposi; the literary connection should therefore be distinguished from the residence story, which is explicitly identified as tradition.

The Castello dell’Innominato can be reached from the Santuario di San Girolamo via an easy, scenic path in about 30 minutes. This time is an approximate guide. Check the trail conditions before setting out so that your plans reflect the current situation.

Lakeshore, Cycling Route and Travel

Vercurago’s lakeside promenade stretches from the mouth of the Gallavesa stream along the entire northern shore of Lake Garlate. The Ciclovia dei Laghi di Garlate e Olginate, which passes through Vercurago, offers another way to explore the area. A municipal route description dated May 29, 2023, identifies it as part of the approximately 300-kilometre Brezza route for cyclists and pedestrians. This route follows the Adda River and connects Switzerland with the Po Valley. As route details may change, check the current route before setting out.

The railway station may also be relevant for your journey. A municipal transport notice dated May 29, 2023, lists some train services to and from Bergamo that stop at Vercurago station. Check the current timetable before travelling. The interests you prioritize—pilgrimage sites, cultural history, literature or lakeside paths—can help guide your stay and your travel plans.
