Fiumelatte is a village crossed by the stream of the same name. From its source to the lake, the stream runs for about 250 metres. Its foaming waters give it its milky-white colour.

Stream, Source and Grotto

The Grotta di Fiumelatte opens at an elevation of 325 metres above sea level, above the hamlet of the same name in the municipality of Varenna. It is one of the most striking karst features in the entire Grigna massif. It is not a spring that flows all year round: its water regime is seasonal, with alternating low- and high-water periods. An experiment confirmed the direct connection between the grotto and the karst system in the mountain’s summit area. Thus, the stream’s short course is linked to a geological feature whose water flow varies throughout the year.

The village also has a historical connection: Leonardo da Vinci mentions Fiumelatte under the name Fiumelaccio on folio 214 of the Codex Atlanticus. The 2025 festival programme included canestri and tortelli della Madonna—a specific culinary reference to that festival year.

Getting Around on Foot

From the centre of Varenna, you can reach the village on foot in about 20 minutes via a section of the Greenway dei Patriarchi. To reach the Sorgente di Fiumelatte, start from Piazza San Giorgio, follow Via Roma, pass the cemetery and take a flight of steps. The path then runs halfway up the slope, parallel to the lake, as far as Fiumelatte. The lower route of the Sentiero del Viandante between Lierna, Varenna and Perledo also passes the Fiumelatte springs.

Near the Sorgente, there is a small, well-equipped picnic area right by the river. Facilities may change over time; if they are important to your plans, check what is available on site before your visit. In Varenna, the short Passeggiata degli Innamorati runs along the lake from the ferry landing to the town centre.

At nearby Castello di Vezio, you can visit the gardens, underground areas and ramparts, view works of art, and climb the tower, which houses a permanent exhibition about the Lariosaurus. These destinations offer different options for your stay: the path to the hamlet at Villa Monastero and the exhibition areas at Castello di Vezio.
