Piantedo: Mountain Trails and History
Accommodation in Piantedo
Piantedo combines its connection to Monte Legnone with hikes to Rifugio Scoggione, a rural character and traces of history. You can consider these topics separately as you plan your trip: the hikes have specific times and elevation gains, while Piantedo’s history also tells of old routes and seasonal livestock farming.
The town and its connection to the mountains
Large green spaces, stables and extensive areas for growing corn and fodder crops remain in the northern and southern parts of Piantedo. Agriculture is therefore still part of the town’s character today. Rifugio Scoggione is located in Piantedo on the northern slope of Monte Legnone. Rural landscapes and the town’s connection to the mountains are two distinct aspects that characterize the area.
Hikes to Rifugio Scoggione
From Alpe Rusico, Rifugio Scoggione can be reached on a two-hour hike with an elevation gain of 850 metres. The ascent to Monte Legnone starts at the rifugio and is listed as a three-hour hike with an elevation gain of 1,034 metres. The times refer to different sections of the route: the rifugio is the destination of the first hike and the starting point for the ascent to Monte Legnone on the second. This distinction is useful when assessing the duration and elevation gain of each route.
Check separately whether the rifugio is open. You should also consider the difficulty and conditions of the routes before setting out. This keeps the stated times and elevation gains as a guide to each route, rather than an automatic indication of how to plan your own hike.
Piantedo is listed as one of the local stops on the official route map for the Sentiero Valtellina. If you include this route in your plans, take local signage and conditions into account.
Culture and historic routes
The Santuario di Santa Maria delle Grazie e del Suffragio is the first religious building encountered when entering Valtellina from Lake Como. This sequence of arrival gives the sanctuary a clear connection to regional orientation and makes it a specific cultural point of interest during your stay.
Piantedo’s history is also linked to a route: in the past, the town was a mandatory passage through Pian di Spagna thanks to the road called Scalotta, also known as Scalottola. Both names refer to the road associated with this historic role as a thoroughfare. This adds a perspective on Piantedo that goes beyond individual buildings.
The ruins of an old fortification were discovered in the Verdione area. Their interpretation remains uncertain: they may belong to a castle or a fortified house. This uncertainty is part of how the find is described. The ruins can therefore be considered a historical trace without settling on either possible function.
Another cultural connection arose from Piantedo’s historic transhumance. It established close ties with Valchiavenna, particularly Valle Spluga and nearby Val Gerola. During the summer months, Piantedo’s farmers stayed in these valleys with their livestock. Seasonal places of stay and livestock farming are therefore part of the town’s history, alongside the once-important thoroughfare.
