In Merate, culture, architecture and nature offer different themes to consider when planning a trip. These include a natural history museum with a historical section, outdoor artworks, villas with their own gardens and an astronomical site. Lago di Sartirana adds a protected natural area to the mix. You can therefore decide whether collections, architectural styles, gardens, stargazing or birdwatching should shape your plans.

Museums, Art and Architecture

The Museo Civico di Storia Naturale Don Michelangelo Ambrosioni is housed in a former classroom at the Collegio “Alessandro Manzoni.” Its historical resistance section preserves documents from the Lazzarini archive. Natural history and a collection related to the history of the resistance thus stand side by side as distinct cultural highlights.

In Pagnano, a district of Merate, the Fondazione Giuseppe Mozzanica is dedicated to the work of a sculptor and painter. It was founded in 2007 to preserve and promote his work. The museum complex includes an open-air courtyard of bronzes, where some of his most significant bronzes and three marble works are displayed. The artistic focus is evident both in the foundation’s purpose and in the works displayed outdoors.

Another architectural detail is the seven-story cylindrical tower of Palazzo Prinetti. Its base is made of stone and its shaft of brick; a Neo-Renaissance loggia crowns the structure. The base, shaft and upper section give the tower a clearly articulated form.

Villas and Gardens

Villa De Ferrari Bagatti Valsecchi is a country estate in Merate built in the 18th century. Frescoes, furnishings and decorations from that period have been preserved. The estate includes a 12,000 m² park combining a romantic garden with an Italian garden. Features mentioned include a pond, a cenotaph, orangeries and a greenhouse. You can therefore consider the estate’s preserved interiors and the park’s design as two distinct aspects of the property.

Villa Il Subaglio is mentioned in a document dating from 1671. Its gardens include an Italian garden with statues and fountains, an English garden and an extensive woodland. By comparison, the park of Villa De Ferrari Bagatti Valsecchi explicitly combines romantic and Italian garden styles with individual architectural features. Visits to Villa Il Subaglio can be booked through a contact person; check availability before your trip.

Stargazing and Nature Conservation

At the INAF site in Merate, guided tours of the grounds and the two domes housing the Ruths and Zeiss telescopes are available. Guided stargazing sessions usually take place three to four times a month when the moon is in its first quarter. The tour of the grounds and domes and the observation session tied to a specific lunar phase are separate offerings. Check booking details before your trip.

Lago di Sartirana is located in the Merate area. It has been a nature reserve of the Lombardy region since 1983 and has also been designated a Site of Community Importance (SCI) since 2003. The 23-hectare green area around the lake includes a path along the embankment that leads into the reed bed, as well as a wooden bridge to a birdwatching hide. Access to the reed bed is restricted seasonally. Take this restriction into account and check access to this section before your visit.

Each theme offers a different focus: the villas center on historic interiors and gardens, while the INAF site focuses on astronomy and telescopes. Lago di Sartirana combines its protected-area status with a designated birdwatching area. You can tailor your choices to the cultural or natural perspectives that interest you most.
