Molteno brings together a valley surrounded by hills and a local history that comes to life at Ceppo, Villa Rosa and the railway station. The Bevera flows through the valley; the oldest inhabited settlement lies on Ceppo, which is predominantly rocky. The townscape also includes religious buildings, Villa Rosa’s public park and landmarks from the history of transport. These points of interest range from landscape and geology to architecture and tradition, offering different ways to explore Molteno as a travel destination.

Valley, hills and Ceppo

The hills of Molteno and Sirone form an extensive gravel fan. Its composition includes a conglomerate of marine origin, as well as extensive alternating layers of consolidated gravel and sandstone. The shape of the valley and its geology offer two perspectives on the surrounding area: the Bevera flows through the valley surrounded by hills, while the gravel fan and rock strata describe its geological structure. For those interested in natural history, the geology of the hills adds another perspective to the landscape. Molteno’s oldest inhabited settlement lies on Ceppo, a predominantly rocky hill. The parish church of Molteno stands at its summit.

The Church of San Rocco stands on elevated ground in the historic town center and can be reached directly from the main road that runs through Molteno. Two religious landmarks are therefore located in different parts of the townscape: the parish church on Ceppo and San Rocco in the historic center, by the main road. This distinction helps you tell the location of the oldest settlement apart from the main points of orientation in the center.

Villa Rosa: building and park

The Villa Rosa complex comprises several buildings from different periods and the public park of the same name. The building history begins with the first core of the later building, constructed between 1849 and 1855; the different construction periods give the complex several historical layers. The park was designed according to the principles of an English garden. Its features include, among other things, a pavilion, a former swimming pool, a turtle enclosure and a green theater. Villa Rosa thus brings together two distinct aspects of the ensemble: the development of the buildings and the design of the park. For a stay focused on cultural history, Molteno combines architectural history with a garden whose design and individual features reveal different sides of the town.

Tradition and turtles in the park

The traditional Sagra di San Rocco took place in 2026 from August 14 to 17 at the Oratorio di San Giovanni Bosco in Molteno. Another event takes place in Villa Rosa’s park: Tarta-Day is an annual event dedicated to the health of the turtles living there. At the 2026 edition, visitors could watch the turtle pond being cleaned and emptied. The two examples have different focuses: the Sagra is a traditional festival with a clearly specified date and venue for 2026; Tarta-Day focuses on the park’s turtles and their health. The events thus complement the town’s architectural and local history with a festival and a nature-related occasion.

The railway station and Molteno’s transport history

The development of the railway station can also be traced through two dates. It opened in 1888, when the Como–Lecco line was completed. In 1911, with the establishment of the line to Monza, it became a junction station. This sequence shows how its historical role changed: the opening in connection with the line to Lecco was followed by another connection to Monza. The railway station is therefore another point of interest in the town’s history, alongside Ceppo and Villa Rosa. Taken together, these landmarks give an impression of how Molteno can be explored through its landscape, settlement, architecture and transport history.
