Suceava Among Monasteries, Museums and Nature
Accommodation in Suceava
The Princely Fortress of Suceava combines a distinctive historical setting with a permanent exhibition. For almost 200 years, it was the main residence of the Moldavian princes. The exhibition includes medieval weapons, the coats of arms of Moldavian princes and boyars, and the medieval Moldavian treasure. Those interested in the history of the princes will find both a historic site and exhibits from Moldavia’s past here.
Museums Between Rulership and Everyday Culture
The Bucovina Village Museum offers a different perspective. It showcases traditional farmhouses and communal buildings, regional occupations and crafts, and the way of life of people in Bucovina. In the workshops, traditional craft techniques are demonstrated and taught to children and tourists. Alongside the buildings, the region’s skills and everyday life are also in the spotlight.
At Hanul Domnesc, architectural history meets an ethnographic exhibition. The historic building was documented in 1627 and was originally the home of the Moldavian prince Miron Barnovschi. Its permanent exhibition presents six ethnographic zones of Suceava County: Fălticeni, Humor, Dorna, Rădăuți, Câmpulung Moldovenesc and Suceava. On the ground floor, the museum recreates an inn from the 18th and 19th centuries, with period furnishings and objects related to transport and hunting. The tour therefore brings different regional ways of life alongside the history of the building.
Churches, Monasteries and History
In Cacica, religious heritage and salt extraction represent two distinct historical themes. The Roman Catholic church was built in 1904 by the local Polish community and was granted the status of a Minor Basilica in 2000. Cacica Salt Mine is one of Europe’s oldest sites for extracting salt recrystallized from brine; the Ferdinand shaft opened in 1791. Together, the two sites offer insights into religious tradition and the history of salt extraction.
The monasteries also differ in their history and architecture. Arbore Monastery is a UNESCO World Heritage Site; the church was founded by Luca Arbore and initially used as a family burial place. Sucevița combines Byzantine and Gothic elements with architectural features of old Moldavian wooden churches. Moldovița is a fortified complex, founded in 1532 and painted in 1537. Voroneț, in turn, is known for the globally unique “Voroneț blue” in the backgrounds of its exterior frescoes. These examples reveal the monasteries’ different architectural and artistic features.
Traditions and Crafts
Traditional forms of expression can also be found outside the monasteries. Ciocănești is known for motifs painted on the exterior façades of houses. At the “Arta Lemnului” Museum in Câmpulung Moldovenesc, the subject matter ranges from traditional regional occupations to woodworking, rafting, hunting and fishing, as well as various household items. Together with the workshops at the Bucovina Village Museum, these themes offer different ways to explore crafts and regional ways of life.
Nature and Outdoor Activities
The Slătioara Primeval Forest has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 7, 2017, and is part of the Rarău–Giumalău Natura 2000 Site of Community Importance. In the Călimani Mountains, Pietrosul is the highest peak at 2,100 meters and can be reached from Gura Haitii. These two natural destinations offer different perspectives: the protection of a forest area and a prominent mountain peak.
The Rarău Massif is accessible by three roads and offers opportunities for cycling, trekking, horseback riding, ski touring, freeriding, off-road activities, ice climbing, mountaineering, sport climbing and paragliding. The Via Transilvanica begins in Bucovina at Putna Monastery; the Bucovina section is 144 kilometers long. Putna Monastery is also easy to locate in relation to rail travel: it is approximately 1.5 kilometers from Putna railway station.
When planning your trip, you can first decide whether exhibitions and regional everyday culture, monastic architecture or outdoor activities will be your focus. The Via Transilvanica offers a longer route section, while the museums and historic sites each have their own themes. This makes it possible to choose destinations based on what matters to you during your stay in Suceava.
