Discover Rădăuţi: Churches, Monastery and Culture
Accommodation in Rădăuţi
Rădăuţi brings together historic buildings, folklore and nature, offering different ways to shape a stay. These include the stone church of Bogdana Monastery, religious buildings from various centuries, a designated wetland, a zoological park and recurring events. If you are looking for a hotel in Rădăuţi, the time of your trip may depend on whether a specific event date or the history of the buildings and town is more central to your stay.
Bogdana Monastery and medieval history
The stone church of Bogdana Monastery is dedicated to Saint Hierarch Nicholas. It was built after 1359 on the site of an older wooden church. The change from a wooden structure to a stone church gives the monastery’s history a specific point of reference: the medieval church followed the earlier building. The monastery is considered Moldavia’s first necropolis. Members of the Mușatin family buried there include Bogdan I, Petru II (Mușat), Roman I and Ștefan I. At Bogdana, religious architecture and dynastic remembrance are thus connected; the necropolis function adds the monastery’s burial history to the story of the church.
Religious buildings from several centuries
The Roman Catholic Church of “Sfânta Fecioară Maria” was built in the Romanesque style from 1823 to 1826. The Jewish Temple was built from 1880 to 1883 and inaugurated on August 18, 1883. The “Pogorârea Duhului Sfânt” Cathedral was built in two stages: from 1927 to 1940 and from 1947 to 1961. All three buildings were declared historic monuments in 2004. Their construction dates span from the early 19th century to the second half of the 20th century; their joint designation as historic monuments provides another point of reference in time.
Folklore and events
A recurring cultural event is the ceramic vessel market, held annually in Rădăuţi in July and August since 1982. The international folklore festival “ARCANUL” has been held in the town since 1992. It presents traditional songs and dances from Romania’s ethnofolkloric regions, as well as traditions from other countries. The two events have different focuses: the market is centered on ceramics, while ARCANUL features Romanian regional and international folklore.
Nature reserve, wildlife and equestrian sports
The Rădăuţi area is home to the wetland of the same name, a five-hectare area designated as a nature reserve. Rădăuţi Zoological Park covers ten hectares and is home to more than 250 animals from every continent. In terms of area, the park is twice the size of the wetland. The two figures describe different features of the locations: the wetland’s protected status, and the park’s area and the geographic origins of its animals. Rădăuţi Stud Farm hosts numerous equestrian competitions, including races, show jumping and draft horse competitions. If a competition is the reason for your trip, check the specific date and visitor arrangements in advance.
A historic railway station building
Another historic landmark is the reception building at Rădăuţi railway station. It dates from 1889, was modernized in 2001 and was declared a historic monument in 2004. This sequence distinguishes its original construction, later modernization and historic monument designation. The building adds another historical theme to the city’s religious and cultural attractions.
