Accommodation in Moldova-Sulița
When planning your trip to Moldova-Sulița, you can consider nature and cultural heritage as two distinct focuses. Nature-related highlights include several protected areas and landscapes; historical landmarks range from churches to the memorial cross near Lucina.
Protected Areas and Natural Landscapes
Cheile Lucavei is located in the municipality of Moldova-Sulița, along the road toward Lucina. Covering 33 hectares, it is a geological and morphological protected area. Rare plants protected there include bearberry and edelweiss. This natural destination therefore draws attention to both its geological classification and its distinctive flora.
The Tinovul Găina-Lucina bog offers a different focus. It lies within the administrative area of the municipality of Moldova-Sulița in Suceava County, at an elevation of 1,165 meters above sea level and within the ROSCI0086 Găina-Lucina Natura 2000 protected area. The natural destinations are distinguished by their named features: Cheile Lucavei is notable for its protected area and examples of plant life, while Tinovul stands out for its elevation and Natura 2000 designation.
Tourist and educational activities are permitted in the Răchitișul Mare Nature Reserve, provided you follow the applicable visitor rules. Access is via European route E576, then DJ175 to the village of Benea in the municipality of Moldova-Sulița, followed by a further two kilometers. Road conditions can vary, so check them before setting out.
Routes and Activities
The Cârlibaba–Moldova-Sulița circular cycling route first reaches the Cheile Lucavei Nature Reserve and, after a further two kilometers, the main road in the center of the municipality of Moldova-Sulița. This identifies both a stopping point and the next section of the route, providing a specific reference for planning a cycling trip.
Hiking is also among the activities documented in the area. Youth programs in 2022 and 2025 included a high-altitude hike up Știrbu, which stands at 1,477 meters. A youth program in 2025 included entering Peștera Lucavei; a youth program from the same year also visited Cheile Lucavei and a sulfur-water spring. If you plan to visit the cave itself, check access arrangements in advance.
History and Huțul Culture
Herghelia Lucina is located in the Lucava Valley, a small depression in the Obcina Mestecănișului mountains, and was founded in 1856. At the annual Huțul Festival at Herghelia Lucina, Huțul traditions and history are kept alive through language, song, and dance. For specific travel planning, check the date of the next event.
Historical sites in Moldova-Sulița include the wooden church of the Sfântul Vasile cel Mare Monastery. The Church of Sfântului Nicolai in Moldova-Sulița was founded in 1895 and consecrated in 1896. There is also a stone memorial cross near Lucina, erected on August 10, 1889. These sites offer different historical points of reference, from church history to a dated memorial.
Traditional handicrafts are also part of the area’s cultural history: in Moldova-Sulița and Breaza, the art of decorating eggs on a dark background was highly valued in the past. Along with the festival and churches, this custom adds cultural themes to the nature and hiking focus when planning your trip.
