Frumosu: Hiking and Bukovina Culture
Accommodation in Frumosu
Frumosu brings together mountain scenery, hiking trails, and Bukovinian cultural heritage. The commune offers a variety of ways to plan your trip: routes with named elevation points, churches and traditional crafts, as well as a pastoral festival in early May. In 2021, the Romanian government recognized the commune of Frumosu as a spa resort of local interest.
Frumosu between the river and the ridges
The commune lies in the lower basin of the Moldovița, in the mountainous area of the Obcinele Bucovinei. The Moldovița, a tributary of the Moldova River, flows through its territory, as do the Dragoșa, Frumosu, and Deia streams. Forests also shape the landscape: the commune has 7,286 hectares of deciduous and coniferous forest.
Frumosu is bordered to the west by the Obcina Feredeului, whose elevations range from 1,300 to 1,400 meters. To the east, the Obcina Mare reaches 1,200 meters. The rivers, streams, forests, and two ridges provide distinct points of reference in the landscape. Those interested in the area can connect these features with the specific routes and place names along the hiking trails.
Hiking trails with named stages
One hiking route runs from Frumosu via Vatra Moldoviței and several high points to Sucevița: Vârful Palmania at 1,059 meters, Dealul Fusa at 1,162 meters, Dealul Lupoaia at 1,161 meters, Vârful Poiana Prislop at 1,180 meters, and Pasul Ciumârna at 1,100 meters. It then follows the Sucevița Valley to Sucevița. The sequence of named places and elevations makes the route easy to follow.
Other hiking routes lead from Frumosu along the Deia stream to the Obcina Feredeu and Vârful Deia at 1,200 meters. Another route goes to Vârful Tomnatecu at 1,302 meters and on to Prisaca Dornei. The routes therefore have different named destinations. As trail conditions can change, check them locally before setting out on a hike.
Churches, woodcraft, and Bukovinian traditions
The central church of the commune of Frumosu is dedicated to the Nativity of the Mother of God. It dates from 1866 and was restored by 2005. In the village of Deia, also within the commune, stands the Church of Saint Great Martyr Dimitri. It was built of wood on a stone foundation. The two churches offer different architectural points of reference for exploring the commune’s religious heritage.
Traditional architecture can also be seen in many details: decorative woodwork features on porches, doors, window frames, wells, gates, and fences. Bukovinian folk art includes weaving, sewing, decorating Easter eggs, and making traditional costumes embroidered with beads and marten fur. Other local crafts include blacksmithing, making leather belts, wood carving, and basketry.
Frumosu is also associated with Măsura oilor, a pastoral festival. Held in early May, it marks the forming of sheepfolds or the herds’ departure for summer pastures. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the program for the specific year in advance. The commune’s “Brăduțul” ensemble performs Christmas traditions such as caroling, Urături, “Jocul caprei,” and “Jocul ursului”; its repertoire also includes singing performances and regional folk dances. The two cultural highlights take place at different times, offering different opportunities to engage with the commune’s traditions.
Getting there and other destinations
The commune of Frumosu can be reached via the road along the Moldovița Valley on DJ 176 between Vama and Moldovița. Frumosu is also on the tourist route to Moldovița Monastery, a UNESCO monument. This information helps you place the commune in your regional itinerary without treating hiking, driving, and sightseeing as the same activity.
At La Borți, a former sulfur mine was modernized and converted into a tourist mine. An October 2022 report describes this conversion; a description from the same year mentions white, mostly round or conical stalactites measuring between 1 and 40 centimeters in the western gallery. If you plan to include La Borți in your trip, check current visiting options in advance.
