Şaru Dornei brings together nature and culture with a range of landscape destinations. The Călimani National Park visitor centre and the boardwalk through the Tinovul Şaru Dornei peat bog offer a different focus from the trails to 12 Apostoli and Pietrosul. This makes it easy to distinguish between an exhibition, exploring the peat bog, a summit destination and a scenic route when planning your trip. The trail to 12 Apostoli can be assessed by its approximate distance and duration.

Visitor Centre and Peatland

The Călimani National Park visitor centre in Şaru Dornei opened in 2013. Its educational exhibition presents the natural assets of the national park, as well as the local landscape and culture.

At Tinovul Şaru Dornei, a purpose-built thematic trail offers a two-hour exploration of the hidden world of the peat bog. Unlike the exhibition, this activity focuses directly on the peatland and pairs the subject with a specific duration.

12 Apostoli and Pietrosul

The 12 Apostoli nature reserve features rock formations shaped like human and animal figures that attract many visitors. The 12 Apostoli summit can be reached from Gura Haitii in the commune of Şaru Dornei via a trail marked with a blue dot. Allow about 12 kilometres and approximately three hours for the round trip. Check trail conditions locally before choosing the route.

At 2,100 metres, Pietrosul is the highest peak in the Călimani Mountains. A hiking trail leads there from Gura Haitii via 12 Apostoli and Pietrele Roșii. The two destinations offer different highlights: at 12 Apostoli, the rock formations define the landscape, while Pietrosul is the range’s highest summit. The route via 12 Apostoli and Pietrele Roșii connects these mountain destinations in sequence.

Routes with Scenic Views

The Drăgoiasa–Mănăstirea Neagra Şarului–Şaru Dornei trail offers views of the Călimani peaks, Muntele Bucinişul, with its shepherds’ huts strung along the ridge, and the Bistriței Mountains in the background. The route leads into the commune of Şarul Dornei and passes Mănăstirea Neagra Şarului. Its endpoint is in the village of Negra Şarului, at the tourist information centre, not in the central village of Şaru Dornei.

The 05MB21 “Şaru Dornei – Neagra Şarului – Şaru Dornei” cycling circuit runs through the Depresiunea Șarul Dornei around the Tinovul Şarul Dornei nature reserve. Unlike the two-hour peat bog trail, this route is a cycling loop around the protected area. Cycling route conditions can change seasonally; check them locally before setting out.

Cultural Event in Țara Dornelor
