Solca lies on the eastern edge of the Obcina Mare. Its monastery history, springs and hiking trails offer visitors a range of ways to explore the area. If you are looking for a hotel in Solca, you can choose where to stay based on whether historic buildings, scenery or getting your bearings on the named roads and hiking routes are your priorities.

Monastery History and Architecture

Solca Monastery was built between 1612 and 1622 as a foundation of Prince Ștefan Tomșa and is dedicated to the Apostles Peter and Paul. The construction period, founder and dedication offer different points of reference for placing the monastery in its historical context: they link its origins in the early 17th century with its religious significance.

Another point of interest is the Solca Museum House. It dates from 1670 and is included in the list of folk architecture monuments in Suceava County. In the area around Solca, it stands on the access road to the Arbore and Humor monasteries. Comparing the dates puts the monastery’s construction period alongside the Museum House’s specific year of construction; the surviving records also distinguish the two buildings by their dedication and monument status, respectively.

Springs and Scenery Around Solca

The local springs can be distinguished by their location and characteristics. Burcut is a mineral spring on the left slope of the Solcuța stream, below Mount Cerbul. The chlorosodic springs in Slatina Mare lie at an elevation of 650 metres and are among the most frequently visited locally. At Burcut, the stream, slope and mountain pinpoint the spring; for Slatina Mare, the spring type, elevation and local visitor frequency are specified.

West of Solca, beyond several wooded ridges, lies a group of large rocks locally known as Pietrele Muierilor. Its direction and the wooded ridges help situate the rock group in the landscape. Along with the different spring locations, they give a picture that is not limited to a single point in the landscape: the descriptions range from the stream slope below Cerbul to the springs in Slatina Mare and the rocks west of the town.

Road Connections for Getting Your Bearings

The DN 2E national road (Păltinoasa–Marginea) passes through the central part of Solca. It connects European route E576 with the tourist road route to the religious sights of Putna and Moldovița. Another connection is the DN 2K, which runs from Solca via Arbore and Milișăuți to its junction with European route E85. For trip planning, these can be distinguished as two road routes: the DN 2E, which passes through central Solca, and the DN 2K connection via Arbore and Milișăuți.
