Gura Humorului: Bukovina Monasteries, Slopes and Ariniș
Accommodation in Gura Humorului
Bukovina culture and monasteries, two ski slopes with different difficulty ratings, and leisure activities in Ariniș give a trip to Gura Humorului several distinct focal points. A museum dedicated to Bukovina folk customs and a hiking trail with views of the Moldova Valley are also among the options to consider when planning.
Monasteries and Bukovina culture
Voroneț Monastery is located within the territory of Gura Humorului, four kilometers from the administrative center. Humor Monastery is less than six kilometers from Gura Humorului and can be reached via the DJ 177. The two distances refer to different starting points: for Voroneț, it is the administrative center; for Humor, it is the town of Gura Humorului. The present-day church of Humor Monastery was built in 1530.
The Museum of Bukovina Folk Customs is part of the cultural offering. It presents folk traditions in a museum setting and is considered a unique institution in Romania’s cultural network. The regional context is also of interest to culture enthusiasts: Gura Humorului belongs to the Bukovina Monasteries area. This area stretches between the valleys of the Suceava and Moldovița rivers across the Bukovina Obcinas, and is crossed by three circular tourist routes.
Another cultural highlight is the international festival of satirical graphics and humorous literature, “Umor la… Gura Humorului,” which began in 1991.
Slopes and leisure activities in Ariniș
The Șoimul I and Șoimul II ski slopes differ in both length and rating. Șoimul I is 1,500 meters long and has a medium-to-high difficulty rating. Șoimul II is 550 meters long and is suitable for beginners. Their lengths and difficulty ratings give you concrete points of comparison without applying one slope’s rating to the other.
An observation tower stands on the upper plateau of the Șoimul ski slope. In summer, the Șoimul chairlift offers views of the surrounding mountains. The experience therefore changes with the activity and season, from the slopes to summer views from the chairlift.
The Ariniș leisure complex includes the Megatiroliana Bucovina, a 2.2-kilometer-long zip line. The Ariniș Aquatic Center has three heated pools: one indoor pool and two outdoor pools. The indoor pool area also has two saunas and a hot-water whirlpool. The Ariniș activities therefore vary in character, from spending time in the water to riding the zip line. Operating details may change; check the facilities’ latest information for your specific travel dates.
Routes and views
Gura Humorului lies on the east–west tourist route DN 17, which connects Suceava, Vatra Dornei and Cluj. Most access roads to nearby tourist destinations branch off from this route. For planning purposes, DN 17 provides a connection to several of the cities mentioned and to routes into the region.
The hiking trail “Gura Humorului – Vârful Piciorul Înalt – Dealul Cetate – Gura Humorului” starts at the edge of Gura Humorului, in the direction of the village of Mănăstirea Humorului. From the summit of Vârful Piciorul Înalt, the trail offers views over the Moldova Valley, Gura Humorului and Obcina Vornețului. If you plan this hike, check the latest trail conditions before setting out.
