Straja Commune brings together architectural history and living craft traditions in a landscape shaped by river and forest. Churches, the Casa Muzeu – Straja and the trails described here offer concrete themes for planning your trip: you can focus on local history and culture, or combine them with nature and a route.

The Suceava River crosses Straja from east to west; the commune is part of the Obcinele Bucovinei. Forests cover a large part of its area. This situates local and cultural history within a landscape that is also reflected in the trails around Straja.

Churches and Architectural History

The church of the Straja I parish, “Adormirea Maicii Domnului,” is located in the centre of the commune. It was built between 1867 and 1870 and first consecrated in October 1877. Its construction and first consecration are two distinct milestones in its history.

Another church, “Sfinții Împărați Constantin și Elena,” was built between 2010 and 2016 in the classical Moldavian, Ștefanian style. The construction periods of the two churches thus span from the 19th century to the 2010s. Visitors interested in sacred architecture will find in Straja both a historic building and a more recent example of this style.

Collection, Weaving and Folk Culture

The Casa Muzeu – Straja was donated to the Adormirea Maicii Domnului parish in Straja in 2019 and moved that same year to the church’s vicinity, onto the parish grounds. Its collection includes numerous old household items gathered in the village. It also contains letters and postcards from the front, prisons and concentration camps, as well as medals and awards from the two world wars. Everyday objects and historical documents offer different ways to explore local history.

Traditional crafts are also part of the commune’s cultural identity: the weaving used for folk costumes is still practised in Straja. This includes the distinctive “Trăistuța de la Straja.” The “Străjăncuța” folk ensemble has preserved songs, dances, Christmas carols and customs across five generations; it was established in Straja in 1974.

The 2023 edition of the “Mândră-i Straja-n sărbătoare” festival was the seventh. It began with religious ceremonies and continued with events focused on culture, education and recognition. Sucevița Monastery is another distinct regional cultural reference: its interior and exterior walls are completely covered with 16th-century murals.

River Landscapes and Trails

The trail to Vârful Scorbura starts in Straja on the road to the former CFR station. After leaving the road, it climbs through the forest. Vârful Scorbura is listed at 980 metres on the route from Straja. The route can therefore be identified by its starting point, its climb through the forest and its named summit destination; actual trail conditions may change.

The trail to Schitul Daniil Sihastrul is accessed via the road to the former CFR station in Straja. Allow about one hour and 30 minutes for the section from the area of the Suceava Bridge to the trailhead; the duration may vary depending on conditions. Check the route details locally before setting off on foot.
