Poiana Stampei Commune: Moorland and Traditions
Accommodation in Poiana Stampei Commune
The Tinovul Mare Poiana Stampei Natura 2000 site includes active peat bogs and bogs with forest vegetation. It is Romania’s largest natural peat bog reserve and covers 675.11 hectares, including its protection zone. Its designation as ROSCI0247 Tinovul Mare Poiana Stampei protects six species and three habitats of community interest; two of these habitats are priority habitats.
Walk across the bog on the boardwalk
The Tinovul Mare themed trail is an easy, linear hiking route approximately 800 metres long. It crosses the bog on a wooden boardwalk that defines the route. There are two possible starting points: the entrance to the nature reserve and Cabana Poiana Izvoarelor. Information boards and signs mark the route. Access information and signage may change, so check the current trail signs before setting out. Camping is prohibited in the Tinovul Mare area.
Getting your bearings in Poiana Stampei
Poiana Stampei lies on National Road 17 between Vatra Dornei and Bistrița. The settlements developed along the Dorna River. Visitors wishing to learn more about Călimani National Park can find a park visitor information point in Poiana Stampei, where rangers provide information about tourism and biodiversity.
Church history and Casa Muzeu
The Church of “Sfinții Arhangheli Mihail și Gavriil” was built between 2015 and 2023. Its construction followed a fire in February 2015 that destroyed the historic 19th-century church. The building’s history therefore comprises two clearly distinct chapters: the loss of the older church building and the construction of the new church in the years that followed.
Casa Muzeu was established to keep the history of Poiana Stampei alive. On display is a traditional home interior, with a hearth, veranda, crockery cupboard and other household items. The furnishings on display offer visitors a tangible glimpse of domestic life, while the church provides another perspective on the history of the locality.
Local Christmas and Easter traditions
“Sfânta Seară de Crăciun” is a local tradition that has been held for more than two decades. The celebration aims to bring locals and tourists together for Christmas carols and shared festivities. Its focus is on music and celebrating together.
In 2026, Joia Mare included a traditional market featuring fasting and Easter specialities such as Pască, Cozonac, lamb, eggs, Drob and Afinată. The programme also included a food and drink exhibition for sales and Easter egg decorating workshops at Casa de Cultură Poiana Stampei. The contrast between the festive themes is also useful for planning a trip: one is associated with Christmas, the other with Easter. If you would like to plan a hotel stay around a festival, check the specific event dates before travelling.
This gives you a choice of different highlights for your trip: the natural landscape of Tinovul Mare, local history at Casa Muzeu and the church, or a seasonal cultural event. Deciding which of these to focus on can help you choose the right time for your stay.
