The “Buna-Vestire” Church of Moldovița Monastery offers a first glimpse into the history of Vatra Moldoviței Commune. Other attractions include a museum of decorated eggs, an ethnographic school museum, and routes for hikers and cyclists. When planning a stay, you can choose your own focus among monastery history, crafts, and different tours.

Moldovița Monastery and its history

Moldovița Monastery was built in 1532 by Petru Rareș near the ruins of a 15th-century monastery. The complex comprises the monastery and church, an entrance tower with a bell tower, the surrounding wall, and the monks’ cells. The monastery’s “Buna-Vestire” Church is listed as a historic monument in Vatra Moldoviței under code LMI SV-II-m-A-05673.01.

The different components help visitors see the monastery as more than just a single church building: the tower, wall, and monks’ cells are also part of the complex. Its construction history dates back to a time when the ruins of an older monastery already stood on the site. For a cultural stay, Moldovița therefore offers both a tangible historical landmark and an expansive monastery complex.

Decorated eggs and rural crafts

The collection at the “Lucia Condrea” Egg Museum comprises more than 11,000 exhibits displayed in 106 cases. It is divided into three sections: unique works by Lucia Condrea, very old decorated eggs, and an international collection. This layout offers different ways to explore egg art—from the work of a single artist and older decorated pieces to exhibits from an international collection. The museum’s international summer school brings together Romanian and foreign participants to learn the craft.

Paltinu’s ethnographic school museum offers another perspective on traditional skills. It was founded in 2000 at the initiative of teacher Huțuleac Tudorița, with the active support of the village school’s pupils. The exhibits include objects related to sheep farming, blacksmithing, and spinning. School pupils guide visitors through the museum. Unlike the collection of decorated eggs, this museum focuses on objects associated with various rural crafts and activities.

Routes on foot, by bike, and on a narrow-gauge railway

The Bucovina section of the Via Transilvanica passes through Vatra Moldoviței. From there, the Via Transilvanica continues through the Obcinele Bucovinei to the Mestecăniș Pass in Pojorâta Commune. Another marked mountain trail is named Vatra Moldoviței–Ciumârna–Obcina Mare. It starts at Moldovița Monastery, passes the ruins of the old monastery, and climbs to Dealul Mănăstirii, which offers a sweeping view over the commune. The trail then passes through Ciumârna, climbs the slope of Obcina Mare, and heads back toward Vatra Moldoviței.

The mountain trail is 18 kilometers long, takes 8 to 9 hours to hike, has 350 meters of elevation gain, and is marked yellow. It is considered accessible in spring, summer, and autumn. Check the trail markings and seasonal conditions locally before setting out. As a longer hike, the route takes a significant amount of time, which you should allow for in your day’s schedule.

For cyclists, the recommended Pojorâta–Vama mountain bike route is another option: it is 111 kilometers long, of moderate difficulty, and follows paved and gravel roads. Between Moldovița and Frumosu, it passes through Vatra Moldoviței. Check the route details locally before setting off. The hike and the mountain bike route differ both in activity and significantly in their stated distances.

The Moldovița narrow-gauge railway is also part of the history of routes in the area: it began as a timber transport line and is now known as the “Mocănița Huțulca.” When planning your trip, you can combine different interests or prioritize them separately—monastery history and crafts on the one hand, and hiking and cycling routes on the other.
