Arbore Commune: Church Art and History
Accommodation in Arbore Commune
Arbore is particularly shaped by its churches and their art history. The Church of the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist in the village of Arbore is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site āChurches of Moldavia,ā which includes eight churches in northern Moldavia with exterior paintings. There are also churches with different building histories, a village museum, and a landscape of gentle hills and remnants of woodland. This lets you shape your trip around cultural heritage and rural attractions.
Churches and Their Art History
The Church of the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist was built in 1502 by Hetman Luca Arbore. Its exterior painting program includes the scene āThe Siege of Constantinople.ā It is considered the last example of this scene on the exterior of a church. Alongside its World Heritage status, a single pictorial motif is therefore also central to the buildingās art history.
The Church of Sfânta Treime in Arbore tells a different building story. Construction began on May 10, 1901, and was completed in 1908; the consecration took place on August 29, 1912. Its iconography includes a series of 16 national saints depicted in Romanian folk costumes. The dates of construction, completion, and consecration give the church its own chronology.
The Evangelical Church was also built in 1912, by the local Evangelical community, which consisted mainly of German settlers. Neo-Gothic influences are visible, among other features, in the tall bell tower and the high, round-arched windows. Some of the original furnishings have been preserved, including wooden pews and a simple altar. The church thus combines its building history with clearly identifiable architectural features.
Village Museum and Local History
The Toader Hrib Village Museum complements the churches with a glimpse of everyday objects and the work of collecting them. Over three generations, the Hrib family assembled the collection of household items used by Romanian peasants, weapons, and old coins. The museum also exhibited pottery fragments, wooden tools, chests, icons, flutes, bagpipes, old photographs, and decorated eggs; some objects were one of a kind. Religious art programs and everyday objects thus feature side by side as distinct themes in the villageās history.
Landscape, Orchards, and Acacia Blossoms
Gentle hills and remnants of woodland shape the landscape of Arbore. To the west, the Obcinele Bucovinei form the backdrop and mark the boundary of the area. A 50-hectare area of acacia woodland is associated with the āFLOARE DE SALCĆMā folklore festival. The seasonal blossoms determine the timing of the festival, giving this landscape theme a seasonal connection. An apple and cherry orchard is also one of the local attractions.
New Year Traditions in Arbore
New Year traditions in the village of Arbore include CÄluČul, Irozii, and Banda. In the Irozii performance, the group is accompanied by musicians. The performers wear traditional costumes decorated with beads and colorful ribbons. The specific arrangements of present-day performances may vary. For planning your trip, these traditions offer a distinct cultural focus alongside the churches and museum.
Planning Your Trip
The DJ 2K county road from Solca to MiliČÄuČi runs through the center of the village of Arbore. The Roman Catholic Church āNaČterea Sfintei Fecioare Mariaā provides another landmark: it is located on the road connecting CĆ¢mpulung Moldovenesc and RÄdÄuČi. When looking for a hotel, consider what you want to focus on during your trip: church art and village history offer a different emphasis from landscapes and New Year traditions.
