Břeclav District: Nature, Wine and Cultural Landscape
Accommodation in Břeclav District
In the southernmost part of Moravia, Břeclav District brings together floodplain forests, pale rocks, vineyards, fields, historic monuments and folk customs. The district encompasses the Dyje-Svratka Basin, the Central Moravian Carpathians and the Lower Morava Basin; the Pálava Hills are its defining high ground. Here, water landscapes and wine-growing meet archaeological sites and cultural heritage. Several themes can help you plan your trip: nature and trails, early history, or regional traditions.
Landscape Between Floodplains and Pálava
The Lednické rybníky National Nature Reserve covers more than 1,000 hectares and is used for fish farming. At the same time, its ponds are among the district’s important breeding sites for waterbirds. Nature protection and human use coexist here. The Nové Mlýny reservoir system covers 3,232 hectares and lies below the Pálava Hills. The Pálava Protected Landscape Area is a biosphere reserve. Rare plants and animals characterize the area; it is also a cultural landscape shaped by the relationship between people and nature.
Educational Trails and Cycling Routes
The Entové educational trail runs for 2 km through floodplain forest to Pohansko Castle. The 7 km Břeclav–Pohansko–Lány educational trail is accessible to pedestrians and cyclists. Between them is the 6.5 km Lužní les educational trail, which runs from Břeclav through Kančí obora to Janův hrad near Lednice. At 2, 6.5 and 7 kilometers, the routes can be compared by length; the floodplain forest, Kančí obora and the respective destinations provide additional guidance when choosing. The Lednické rybníky educational trail starts at the dam of Mlýnský rybník.
Marked cycling routes in the Břeclav area and the Lednice-Valtice area lead to tourist attractions. The tourist information office in Břeclav provides information about the town and region and rents bicycles; check rental availability before your trip.
Archaeology and Cultural Heritage
Pohansko is an archaeological reserve and is considered one of the significant early medieval Slavic archaeological sites. The fortified settlement from the 9th century covered 28 hectares. The Empire-style castle at Pohansko houses an exhibition on local archaeological research. Dolní Věstonice is also associated with the archaeological discovery of the figurine known as the Venus of Dolní Věstonice. Mikulov’s historic medieval center has been designated an urban conservation area since 1952.
Cultural Landscape and Local Traditions
The Lednice-Valtice Cultural Landscape developed through the joining of the Lednice and Valtice estates with the neighboring Břeclav estate. It includes a historic network of roads and landscape paths. The 60-meter-high minaret offers a viewpoint overlooking the estate. Boat trips in the Lednice-Valtice landscape can take visitors to the ruins of Janův hrad; services may vary seasonally.
Wine-growing has a long tradition in the Břeclav region. Ethnographic groups and festivals keep folk song and dance traditions alive. Folklore festivals include Podluží v písních a tancích in Tvrdonice and Kraj beze stínu in Krumvíř. Krojované hody celebrations are strongly rooted in Velké Bílovice, Vrbice, Rakvice, Lanžhot and Moravská Nová Ves. Dates vary by place and year, so check the schedule for your travel dates.
When choosing a hotel in Břeclav District, it is worth deciding first what you want to focus on during your stay: educational trails and floodplains, archaeological sites, or cultural heritage and folklore. This can help you tailor your search to your planned visits. For educational trails, route length offers a concrete basis for comparison; for events, the location and date are key.
