Dolní Dunajovice offers several specific reasons to visit: local history, wine and the landscape of the Dunajovické kopce National Nature Monument.

Local History Around the Parish Church

Dolní Dunajovice was first mentioned in writing in 1183. At the beginning of the 15th century, it was elevated to market-town status and granted the right to hold two annual fairs. These two dates mark different stages in the town’s history: its first written mention and its later market status. In the town center, the parish church of St. Giles has stood on a hill since the beginning of the 16th century. A pillory from the early 18th century has been preserved nearby. The church and pillory thus offer two historical points of reference around the town center, even though they date from different centuries. The church also preserves altar paintings by the artist Jan Stern (1716–1775). Its setting therefore offers a close look at religious art as well as local history.

The Dům Dr. Karla Rennera and the TIC

Another focal point is the Dům Dr. Karla Rennera, built in 1999–2000 on the site of Karl Renner’s birthplace. The hall in the building can be rented for training sessions, seminars and exhibitions. If you are planning an event, confirm the hall’s availability in advance with the local authority. The TIC Dolní Dunajovice is located in the same building, at Poštovní 189, 691 85 Dolní Dunajovice. It provides tourist information as well as details about cultural events. The TIC’s arrangements may vary seasonally.

Winemaking: Historic Tools and Tastings

The exhibition at the Muzeum vinařství features historic tools used by winemakers at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Text and images complement the exhibition. The museum thus focuses on the tools of the trade and their historical context. There is also a dated milestone in the local wine history: the first Dunajovické vinné trhy took place on Sunday, November 24, 1929. Vinařství Tichý, a family winery in Dolní Dunajovice, offers a different experience. Guided wine tastings are available for groups of ten or more; arrange your tasting before your visit. The museum and winery appeal to different interests: historic tools and accompanying materials at the former, and a guided tasting for a sufficiently large group at the latter.

Nature and the Educational Trail in the Dunajovické kopce

The Dunajovické kopce National Nature Monument extends into the cadastral area of Dolní Dunajovice. The ridge offers views in every direction; at least 380 species of vascular plants may occur there over the course of the year. These are two different ways to experience nature: the wide-open scenery of the ridge and its botanical diversity throughout the year. The Naučná stezka po Dunajovických kopcích introduces visitors to the area’s natural and historical features. Established in June 2023, the educational trail is a circular route that returns to its starting point. It begins at a parking area west of Dolní Dunajovice, below Velká Slunečná. Route details may change; check the route before your trip. The trail adds historical themes to the nature experience, while the views and plant species offer further perspectives on the ridge.
