Lundenburg (Břeclav) offers various ways to explore its architectural and urban history. The castle, synagogue, bridge and exhibitions each offer their own focus: from older predecessor structures and historical alterations to archaeological presentations. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, the city’s history can help you shape your trip around your interests.

The castle’s history and access today

Břeclav Renaissance Castle was built on the foundations of an older castle. In the 19th century, the Liechtensteins remodeled it in the Romantic style. For planning your visit, it is important to know what is currently accessible: only the observation point on the castle tower is open to visitors. As opening conditions may change, check them before your visit. This allows you to plan your visit around the part of the castle that is currently accessible.

The synagogue: architecture and use

The synagogue in Břeclav was built in 1868. In 1888, the Viennese architect Max Fleischer renovated it in the Neo-Romanesque style; Moorish elements were used in the interior. Its architectural history therefore combines different influences, although the individual features do not necessarily look alike: the exterior is described as Neo-Romanesque, while the Moorish elements are found in the interior.

The building’s subsequent use is also part of its history. The synagogue underwent extensive reconstruction between 1997 and 1999. It is currently used for cultural and social purposes. The building thus brings together historical architecture, a reconstruction from the late 20th century and a contemporary cultural function.

Pohansko: hunting lodge and exhibition

The Liechtensteins built the Empire-style Pohansko lodge between 1810 and 1812 for hunting. The building stands on the site of an older Slavic rampart. Two periods are therefore important to understanding the site: the early 19th-century building and its hunting function, and the older structure whose site it occupies.

An archaeological exhibition at Zámeček Pohansko opened on September 12, 2023. The exhibition features audiovisual effects, touchscreens, special film projections and other interactive elements. These different media provide a distinct focus alongside the architectural history of the Empire-style lodge, directing attention to archaeological topics.

Exploring the city on foot

The Cukrovarský Bridge is a protected cultural monument and is currently used as a pedestrian bridge. It thus combines historical significance with present-day use by pedestrians. When planning your visit, check the conditions for visiting the places that interest you.

Industrial history and collections

The railway siding connecting the sugar factory to the railway was built in 1870. This date places the connection within the industrial history of the 19th century. The railway link is a distinct historical aspect alongside the synagogue, the castles and today’s pedestrian routes.

Muzeum Pod vodárnou has barrier-free access for people with disabilities and families with strollers. This information is particularly relevant if accessibility at a cultural venue is a factor in your planning.

Lichtenštejnský dům houses a permanent exhibition on the history of the Liechtenstein family. It also displays 20 faithful miniatures of Liechtenstein monuments. They are based on precise digital scans of real buildings. The permanent exhibition and the miniatures offer two different perspectives: the family’s history and individual monuments in miniature. This allows you to tailor your selection of cultural attractions for your stay to architecture, history or archaeological interpretation.
