Šitbořice lies where the Dyjskosvratecký úval meets the foothills of the Ždánický les. Steep hills and narrow ravines shape the surrounding landscape. Highlights for your stay include the Hradisko archaeological site, the Church of St. Nicholas, local customs, cycle ball and cycling routes. If you are looking for a hotel, you can plan your trip around a specific event or your interests in history, nature and cycling.

Hradisko and the church

Hradisko is an important archaeological site in Šitbořice. A central mound, a ditch and an inner rampart survive as remains of a probably medieval fortification. Hradisko is also a low hill in the middle of Šitbořice. According to legend, a small castle was built there; its circular shape resembles a Celtic fortification, and several archaeological finds have also been made there. When assessing the site, it is worth distinguishing the probable dating of the fortification remains from the legend: both are part of the hill’s history, but they have different statuses.

The Church of St. Nicholas is single-nave and Neo-Romanesque. It was built between 1910 and 1913 on the site of an original medieval church. The church is used daily; several hundred parishioners attend Sunday services. If you are planning your visit around a Sunday service, check the current times in advance, as service schedules may change.

Customs and cycle ball

At the end of April, Stavění máje (Maypole raising) remains a tradition in Šitbořice: during a procession, the maypole is carried through the village to the Sokolovna and raised there together. A dance at the Sokolovna follows as part of the custom. Another celebration associated with the Sokolovna is Svatováclavské hody: a procession in traditional costume makes its way there, followed by a dance celebration.

Cycle ball also gives the calendar a specific focal point. TJ Sokol Šitbořice and the municipality of Šitbořice hold the TURNAJ MISTRŮ SVĚTA (World Champions Tournament) every February. International cycle ball tournaments have been held regularly in Šitbořice since 1988. If you are visiting for a celebration or tournament, check the date in advance so your plans match the specific event date.

Cycling routes and getting there

Two cycling routes pass through Šitbořice: the Velkopavlovická Wine Cycling Route and the Šaratice–Šitbořice cycling route (No. 5114). When travelling from Brno, take road II/380 towards Hodonín. About 25 km from Brno, turn right after the village of Těšany. As road conditions may change, check the route shortly before departure.

Štengar mineral water

Štengar is hydrogen sulfide mineral water in Šitbořice. Its sulfane concentration is 5.50–9.50 mg/l H₂S; this laboratory value is not a current medical assessment. лечеб baths have been established in the renovated Orlovna community hall. If you would like to include the baths in your travel plans, check before your trip whether they are available for use.
