Podivín – Culture, History and Tradition
Accommodation in Podivín
Discover Podivín through various aspects of its history and culture: the Jewish cemetery with its distinctive gate, the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, and the regularly held Podivínské hody. If you are looking for a hotel in Podivín, these topics can help you plan your stay around your interests – whether you want to explore architectural history, cultural memory or regional traditions.
The Jewish Cemetery and Its Ornate Gate
The Jewish cemetery in Podivín was established in the second half of the 17th century. One of its notable structures is the ceremonial hall, designed in an Oriental Romantic style and topped with a domed lantern. The cemetery gate is a national cultural monument of the Czech Republic.
The gate’s hand-forged iron grille holds a particularly rich history. Dating from the 16th century, it originally adorned the entrance to the Liechtenstein family’s palace theatre in Lednice, which no longer exists. The gate’s design also catches the eye: its perspective creates the optical impression of an infinite space. At the cemetery, historic craftsmanship meets a deliberately created sense of space.
Please note the special access arrangements: the Jewish cemetery is closed from October to March. During this period, access is possible by prior arrangement with the Podivín municipal office. If the cemetery is important to your plans, arrange access before your visit.
The Church of Saints Peter and Paul
Construction of the Church of Saints Peter and Paul dates back to the first half of the 13th century. Today, it has an unusual Neo-Gothic design and is visible from the surrounding area. It is a striking point of interest for anyone interested in architecture and the long history of a religious building in Podivín.
The protected complex also includes the adjoining rectory and a Baroque statue of Saint Thecla. The church, rectory and statue are listed in the Czech Republic’s register of immovable cultural monuments. When viewing the building, you can consider not only its design but also its relationship to the neighbouring monuments.
Podivínské hody and Regional Tradition
The Podivínské hody, held in honour of Saints Peter and Paul, have taken place regularly on 29 June since 1976. They open the season of hody celebrations in Podluží. The programme includes ceremonial processions and hody festivities, bringing together a religious occasion and a community celebration. If you are planning your trip around this event, check the dates in advance.
Janův hrad and an Easy Hiking Route
Janův hrad is an artificial castle ruin designed by Josef Hardtmuth. It was built from 1807 to 1810 and stands amid floodplain forests on a promontory of the Stará Dyje. Janův hrad is open to the public, both outside and inside. If a visit is important to your plans, check this access information again before your trip.
Another way to explore the area on foot is the easy hiking route “Od vlaku k vlaku – Z Podivína do Ladné” (“From Train to Train – From Podivín to Ladná”). It starts at Podivín railway station and ends at a railway stop after just over seven kilometres. The route description was last updated in February 2021; trail conditions and markings may change. Check them before setting out.
