Wartburg District: Castles, Museums and Special Trails
Accommodation in Wartburg
From a Romanesque castle complex to regional museums and unusual excursion destinations, the Wartburg District offers different ways to explore culture and enjoy outdoor activities. In Creuzburg, the age and size of a castle complex tell the story of its past; in Gerstungen and Falken, the region’s history and earlier worlds of crafts and everyday life take center stage. There are also trails of varying lengths, as well as special experiences underground, on the water and with animals. This lets you shape your trip around the themes that interest you most.
Castles, Exhibitions and Local History
More than 830 years old, Creuzburg is one of Germany’s larger Romanesque castle complexes. Its curtain wall has a circumference of more than 340 meters; the enclosed area measures 7,400 square meters. Its age, classification and dimensions offer different insights into the complex: the circumference describes the curtain wall, while the area figure refers to the space it encloses.
Altenstein Palace houses a Brahms memorial. On display are letters and printed works that document the close relationship between Johannes Brahms and Duke Georg II of Saxe-Meiningen. The palace park offers another way to experience the site: it has around 20 kilometers of park trails, including a 4.3-kilometer circular trail. This specific loop is one option within the park’s longer network of trails.
The Werra Valley Museum in Gerstungen Palace is dedicated to the region’s history; 22 exhibition rooms also bring traditional crafts to life. The Falken local history museum covers a more specific historical period. It is housed in the 32-meter-high fortified tower of St. Martin’s Church and documents village life from 1850 to 1950 in two exhibition rooms.
Point Alpha Memorial is an authentic site of the Cold War. At the House on the Border at Point Alpha, a permanent exhibition explores the history of the division of Germany. These sites present several historical perspectives side by side: regional history and crafts in Gerstungen, village life in Falken, and the division of Germany at Point Alpha.
Explore Trails and Landscapes Actively
The approximately 10-kilometer Sculpture Trail runs from the sculpture park in Behringen to HĂĽtscheroda and back. Along the route are 120 sculptures on a variety of themes; their number may change. The route combines a clearly defined trail with art along the way. On the Werra, the Werra Kali mining district is a paddling route between Bad Salzungen and Vacha.
Timetable and passenger information is available for bus services in the Wartburg region, including hiking buses, buses with bicycle trailers and rail services. If you are planning excursions using these modes of transport, check the relevant timetable information in advance: timetables and services may change. This allows you to prepare your journey to your chosen destinations using the information available.
Special Experiences and Insights
The Merkers Adventure Mine includes a crystal grotto 800 meters underground, a geological site described as unique in the world. The Bad Salzungen Planetarium offers a very different experience: it projects an artificial starry sky onto a dome 8 meters in diameter and 6.5 meters high. These dimensions convey the scale of the room, while the artificial starry sky turns your gaze toward the cosmos.
The mini-a-thĂĽr miniature park in Ruhla features more than 100 detailed models of historic buildings from Thuringia. Animal encounters are the focus at Bad Liebenstein Zoo, where more than 260 animals can be seen up close; some can also be petted and fed. The Rennsteig Falconry offers flight demonstrations featuring falcons, buzzards, eagles, owls and vultures. You can also have a bird of prey land on your own arm. The experience is offered for families, clubs, tour groups and school classes.
Thuringia as a Wider Travel Destination
The Wartburg near Eisenach is part of the wider Thuringia travel destination. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is associated with Martin Luther’s translation of the New Testament. Also within the wider Thuringia travel destination, Hainich was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2011 as part of Germany’s ancient beech forests. These regional connections complement the destinations described in the Wartburg District without replacing their individual themes.
