Tiefenort brings together a variety of themes: a shoe collection at the Museum in the Old Amtshaus, customs and celebrations at Krugs Haus, the history of Krayenburg to the west, as well as cycling and a seasonal outdoor pool. You can tailor your stay to your interests, whether you are especially drawn to traditional crafts, historic architecture or outdoor recreation.

Culture in Tiefenort: Collection and Customs

The Museum in the Old Amtshaus has a shoe collection featuring more than 100 examples from around the world. It was assembled by master shoemaker Burkhard Altstadt, who was born in Tiefenort. The collection thus combines its worldwide range with a clear local connection: the collector’s origins are also part of its story. If you are interested in traditional crafts or everyday objects, this distinctive collection offers a tangible way to explore a single subject. Check the museum’s current visitor information before your visit.

“Krugs Haus” offers a different cultural perspective. The cultural center in Tiefenort is a place where customs are upheld and celebrations are held. While the museum focuses on a collection, cultural traditions and community celebrations shape the character of Krugs Haus. Together, the two places showcase different aspects of cultural life in Tiefenort, without suggesting that you should expect the same kind of visit at each one.

Krayenburg and its History

Krayenburg, west of Tiefenort, brings together several historical layers. It was badly damaged and plundered several times during the Thirty Years’ War, after which it was left to fall into ruin. The surviving masonry is said to date from the 8th century, so this dating should be understood as an assumption. A Romanesque section of the ruin has survived and was sketched by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in 1782. The name “Mother of the Wartburg” has a specific historical basis: building materials from Krayenburg were incorporated into the Wartburg. The 8th century refers to the presumed origin of the masonry, while 1782 is the date of Goethe’s sketch. This distinction helps set apart Krayenburg’s building history, damage and later accounts of the site.

Cycling and the Outdoor Pool

For cyclists, a 2024 cycling guide lists a route that leads to the cycling church at Molterplatz in Tiefenort. If you plan to follow this route description, check current route conditions before setting off.

The seasonal Tiefenort outdoor pool has a large slide, starting blocks and a parent-and-child area with a small slide. There are also two well-maintained volleyball courts. The facilities therefore include both swimming amenities and places to play volleyball. As the pool operates seasonally and the information does not specify current opening hours, check the operator’s seasonal and visitor information before making plans.

More to Explore in Bad Salzungen

Bad Salzungen is also part of the wider destination and has attractions of its own, distinct from those in Tiefenort. Burgsee is right next to Bad Salzungen’s historic old town, and remains of the former Schnepfenburg Castle can be found by the lake. The lakeside promenade is ideal for a stroll, and in good weather, a boat rental service lets you take a trip out on the lake.

The permanent exhibition at the Museum at the Gradierwerk in Bad Salzungen covers salt and its production. The museum also explores the development of the spa industry. Demonstrations of traditional salt boiling take place in a small salt-boiling house in the museum garden. No schedule for these demonstrations is provided, so check the latest visitor information if you would like to plan your visit around one.

Cycling and hiking trails are also part of what Bad Salzungen has to offer: the Werratal Cycle Path and the Rhön Cycle Path pass through the city as officially classified long-distance cycle routes. Several long-distance hiking trails start there or pass through Bad Salzungen. At SOLEWELT, the main pool has a diameter of 25 meters, a water temperature of around 32°C and a brine concentration of 2 percent. The brine floating pool contains 15 percent natural brine and offers a relaxing experience at around 34°C. Check the facility’s latest operating information before your visit.
