Discover Kaltenlengsfeld
Accommodation in Kaltenlengsfeld
In Kaltenlengsfeld, recurring events meet local history and a named hiking trail. When planning your trip, both the time of year and your interest in history or hiking may therefore play a part.
Annual events and celebrations
The traditional Rhön mass ski race takes place in Kaltenlengsfeld every January. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the date of that year’s event. The “Rhöner Evening in Advent” is also held annually and is organized by the municipality together with Kaltenlengsfeld’s clubs and associations. This means there are two recurring occasions at different times of the year: the mass ski race in January and the evening event during Advent.
Village church and local history
The village church in Kaltenlengsfeld preserves an extensive 1721 pictorial cycle on its double galleries, depicting scenes from the Old Testament. The town itself was first mentioned as Lengifeld in a Fulda document from 819. Here, then, you will find two distinct historical points of reference: an early documented form of the name and a dated work of art in the church.
Hiking trail and accommodation
The Rhön Circular Trail Kaltenlengsfeld 2 follows the route of the Vorderrhön Trail, a certified “Extratour” route of the Hochrhöner, north through Hahnberg Forest. This description gives you a specific starting point if hiking is one of your travel interests.
The “Rhönbrise” ski and hiking hut is a rustic-style restaurant that offers overnight accommodation. Check availability before your trip. This lets you plan accommodation separately from deciding whether to arrange your stay around one of the annual events or the town’s history.
In the wider destination of Kaltennordheim
Other historical themes take center stage in Kaltennordheim. The Kilian’s Church there was built in the 14th century to replace a wooden church. St. Nicholas’s Church was built in 1597 as the second and larger church within the town. The local history museum also focuses on everyday life: its barn museum displays historic agricultural tools and scenes of rural life, including baking, milk processing, and food storage.
The trails in Kaltennordheim also differ in their stated details. The Rhön Circular Trail Kaltennordheim 1 is 11.0 km long, takes about four hours, is easy to moderate, and starts, among other places, at Kaltennordheim Town Hall. The Rhön Circular Trail Kaltennordheim 2 starts at the town hall, initially follows the Felda through town, and partly runs through the approximately 50-hectare Große Hardt nature reserve. For the first circular trail, the distance, approximate duration, and difficulty are specified; for the second, the start, initial route, and section through the protected area are highlighted.
One of Kaltennordheim’s annual traditions is the “Marriage Market” at Pentecost. It was first held in 1563 and still takes place every year; in the 19th century, it developed into a folk festival in the Thuringian Rhön. Since it takes place at Pentecost, you can check the date for the relevant year in advance. The “On Old Tracks” guided tour is available on request and includes, among other places, Kilian’s Church, the historic old town, and the surviving town wall. The Amtshaus (administrative building) was built on the site of the former Merlinsburg between 1752 and 1754.
