You can get your bearings in Witzelroda by exploring two themes: its early local history and the Pummpälz Trail, which passes through the town. St. Andrew’s Church is one of the sights in this district. If you are looking for a hotel, you can take both historical connections and the route into account when choosing where to stay. This gives you a concrete starting point without presupposing a particular stay or tour.

History and orientation in Witzelroda

Witzelroda was first mentioned in a document in 1259, under the spelling Wezilnroda. A chapel had already stood in the town by around 1158. These two dates mark distinct early historical milestones: a chapel in the town and, later, the written mention of the town’s name. St. Andrew’s Church is also one of Witzelroda’s sights and offers another tangible point of interest for a culturally oriented stay. The town’s history can therefore be explored through several themes rather than reduced to a single date.

The Pummpälz Trail and past event dates

The Pummpälz Trail passes through Witzelroda. For hikers planning an overnight stay, this route may be a factor in choosing the town. For a specific tour, check the current trail conditions and include the route as a travel purpose in its own right when planning.

The tent fair was scheduled for August 21–24, 2025; that year, it celebrated its tenth anniversary. The third Witzelroda soapbox race was scheduled for September 12, 2026, from 2 p.m.: the castle moat in Witzelroda was to become the racecourse, and the event was hosted by the Heimat- und Traditionsverein Witzelroda-Neuendorf e.V. Both announcements referred to past dates and are not current event dates.

Bad Salzungen: lake, museum and trails

Bad Salzungen is worth a visit in its own right. The Burgsee lies right beside the historic old town, and remains of the former Schnepfenburg have been preserved by the lake. In good weather, the boat rental offers trips across the Burgsee. If you would like to include a boat trip in your plans, check the conditions locally.

In Bad Salzungen, the Museum am Gradierwerk features a permanent exhibition about salt and its production, as well as how spa culture has changed over time. A small salt-boiling house in the museum garden is used for live salt-boiling demonstrations. The subject of salt is therefore explored there both in the exhibition and through demonstrations.

SOLEWELT adds two pools with different features to Bad Salzungen’s attractions. The main pool is 25 meters in diameter, has a water temperature of about 32°C and a brine concentration of 2 percent. The brine flotation pool contains 15 percent natural brine and invites visitors to relax at about 34°C. While the main pool is described in terms of its diameter and lower brine concentration, the flotation pool is distinguished by its higher brine concentration and temperature. Check operating details before your trip.

For cycling, both the classified, long-distance Werratal Cycle Route and the classified, long-distance Rhön Cycle Route pass through Bad Salzungen. Several long-distance hiking trails start there or pass near the city. This lets you plan your trip around cycling and hiking as separate interests.
