Bad Liebenstein: Kurpark, Castle and Cultural History
Accommodation in Bad Liebenstein
Bad Liebenstein combines parkland and historic buildings with hiking trails, theatre and other places to visit. Altenstein Castle, with its 160-hectare landscape park, is part of Bad Liebenstein. The Historic Kurpark, the castle ruins and the Comödienhaus also shape the town’s character. In Schweina, a district of Bad Liebenstein, you’ll also find the Altensteiner Cave and an annual Christmas Eve tradition.
Parks and Trails
The park at Altenstein Castle was designed in part by landscape gardeners Hermann Fürst von Pückler-Muskau, Eduard Petzold and Peter Joseph Lenné. The Historic Kurpark Bad Liebenstein was established in 1799 and, together with Burgberg, covers almost 30 hectares. The scale of the Altenstein landscape park and the more compact Kurpark offer two different park settings within the destination.
In the wider Wartburgkreis destination, the park at Altenstein Castle has around 20 kilometres of park paths, including a 4.3-kilometre circular hiking trail. The Historic Kurpark also has a Kneipp facility and a barefoot trail. A construction-related access notice affects visits; check local conditions in advance.
Castle Ruins and Architectural History
The Bad Liebenstein castle ruins stand on a hill 460 metres above the town. A hiking trail leads from the Kurhaus up to Burgberg, near the ruins, in about 25 minutes. Visits are possible by prior arrangement, so check access before your visit.
The Comödienhaus Bad Liebenstein is one of the oldest theatre buildings in Thuringia. It was built in the spring or summer of 1800 at the request of Duke Georg I of Saxe-Meiningen. Since opening, it has been a venue for theatre, including comedies, operettas, operas and other performances. The Wandelhalle in Bad Liebenstein was built in 1913 in the Neoclassical style. Together, the two buildings reflect different chapters in the town’s architectural and cultural history.
Tours and Other Experiences
The Kultur-NaTour is a moderately challenging 11-kilometre circular route. It starts and finishes at the Bad Liebenstein Tourist Information Centre; the route is listed as having 225 metres of ascent and descent and taking about 3 hours and 30 minutes. It passes Altenstein Castle and descends to the Luisenthal Waterfall. For comparison, the hiking trail from the Kurhaus to Burgberg takes about 25 minutes uphill, while the Kultur-NaTour, at around three and a half hours, makes for a longer outing. Bad Liebenstein also has three terrain therapy trails for exercise in nature.
The Bad Liebenstein Animal Park covers five hectares and is home to around 60 animal species and about 300 animals. There is a playground for children. The animal park offers a different focus from the Kultur-NaTour: here, animal watching and a playground complement the circular route’s landscapes and trails.
Schweina: Show Cave and Christmas Eve Tradition
The Altensteiner Cave in Schweina is Thuringia’s oldest show cave. Its features include a cavern, an underground lake, a stream, light and sound installations, and a 3D model of the cave. It is also a habitat for several protected bat species.
The Fackelbrennen torch-burning event takes place every year on 24 December on Antoniusberg in Schweina and attracts many visitors. If you plan to visit on Christmas Eve, check the specific programme before setting off. Schweina thus offers a cave experience and a recurring holiday tradition alongside Bad Liebenstein’s parks, cultural attractions and hiking destinations.
