Discover Treffurt
Accommodation in Treffurt
Treffurt brings together half-timbered houses, a long castle history and hiking destinations. Notable half-timbered buildings can be found in the old town and in the historic centres of the town’s districts. Other attractions include Normannstein Castle, the local history museum, St. Boniface’s Church and the town hall. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Treffurt, these different highlights can guide your plans: local history, a museum visit or time outdoors.
Half-timbered houses and Normannstein Castle
The Lords of Treffurt developed the castle’s original keep and ring wall into a prestigious complex. After the age of the knights, the co-heirs resided there until the 16th century and administered the town of Treffurt from the castle. Its appearance changed later, too: after 1894, the chapel and gatehouse took on their present form.
The extensively renovated castle features the exhibition “Werra Castles Above Werra Fords,” a castle restaurant and two wedding rooms in a historic setting. Important for your plans: the exhibition and castle restaurant are currently closed. The castle’s history can therefore be explored from the development of its complex to its later structural changes, without assuming that the currently closed facilities can be visited.
Local history museum and historic buildings
The Treffurt Local History Museum spans four floors. It showcases crafts and geological finds and covers topics such as the co-heirship and the division of the town into three parts. Other exhibition highlights include traditional Werra ceramics, regional geology and local cigar-making. The topics thus range from regional materials and crafts to the history of the town.
For children, there is a treasure hunt with Rosalie the museum mouse, as well as the chance to experience what learning was like in the past at an old school desk. Visits can be arranged by contacting the tourist information office; please coordinate your visit with them in advance. This lets you combine a museum visit with the activities on offer without assuming that the museum is open for walk-in visits at any time.
St. Boniface’s Church and the town hall also tell stories of different eras. The church dates back to the 13th century and houses, among other things, a Gothic winged altarpiece. Treffurt Town Hall, with its large tower, was built in the 16th century. It was extensively renovated in 1990, and its half-timbering was exposed. Together, the two buildings offer insight into Treffurt’s architectural history, from the medieval church to the early modern town hall.
Hiking trails and views
The Normannstein TOP hiking trail combines several landscape experiences and stops. The “Lindenhecke” rest area offers 360-degree panoramic views, and sun loungers invite you to linger. Further along, you can discover botanical features such as orchids and works of art along the Ars Natura trail. Trail conditions and the state of the sun loungers may change; check both before your outing if needed.
The Leine-Werra Nature Park Trail leaves Treffurt via the 362-metre-high Sülzenberg. Along the way, there are repeated views of the Werra Valley. Another notable high point is Adolfsburg: the 378-metre-high shell-limestone mountain is a popular hiking destination, with its summit offering wonderful views. The stated heights and views distinguish the two destinations, giving you different landscape features to consider when planning.
Whether your focus is on half-timbered houses and architectural history, arranging a visit to the local history museum, or enjoying views from the hiking trails, Treffurt offers a range of interests to weigh up when choosing a destination. For your stay, you can first decide which of these interests matters most, then look for suitable hotels in Treffurt.
