Kaltennordheim can be explored through several themes: churches and town history, insights into rural daily life, the Pentecost market known as the “Heiratsmarkt” (Marriage Market), and two Rhön circular trails. Whether you want to focus on historic sites, the market or a hike makes a difference to your travel plans. The following stops offer specific points of reference to help you choose the focus of your stay.

Churches and Local History

Kilianskirche in Kaltennordheim was built in the 14th century to replace a wooden church. Nikolaikirche followed in 1597 as the town’s second and larger church. The two churches thus represent different periods of construction and the later development of Kaltennordheim’s ecclesiastical history.

If you would like to connect several historic landmarks, the “Auf alten Spuren” (“In Old Footsteps”) town tour includes Kilianskirche, the historic old town and the surviving town wall. The tour is available on request. The Amtshaus (administrative building) was built on the site of the former Merlinsburg between 1752 and 1754. A room in the gatehouse of the local history museum references Johann Wolfgang Goethe, who stayed in Kaltennordheim in 1780 and 1782.

Local History Museum and Daily Life

The museum barn at the local history museum displays historic farming equipment and depictions of rural life. These include baking, milk processing and food storage. These themes focus on practical activities and complement the churches and town wall with insights into rural life.

The local history museum is housed in the Merlinsburg building; the section of the museum relating to the palace is currently being renovated and is not open to visitors.

The Heiratsmarkt at Pentecost

The “Heiratsmarkt” in Kaltennordheim is held annually at Pentecost. The market was first held in 1563; in the 19th century, it developed into a folk festival in the Thuringian Rhön. The market therefore combines a long tradition with a regular place in the annual calendar. As Pentecost falls on different dates each year, the event date changes too. If you want to plan your trip around the market, check the date for the relevant year before making your plans.

Hiking on Two Rhön Circular Trails

Different planning considerations apply to the two Rhön circular trails. The Kaltennordheim 1 Rhön Circular Trail is 11.0 km long, takes about four hours and is rated easy to moderate. It starts, among other places, at Kaltennordheim Town Hall. The approximate walking time can help you estimate how much time to allow for the hike.

The Kaltennordheim 2 Rhön Circular Trail starts at the town hall and initially follows the Felda through the town. In places, it runs through the approximately 50-hectare Große Hardt nature reserve. When choosing between the trails, you can therefore weigh up different considerations: for the first trail, these are its length, approximate duration and difficulty level; for the second, the initial stretch along the Felda and the section through the protected area provide guidance.

More Sights in the Wartburgkreis

The wider Wartburgkreis travel destination offers additional distinct points of interest. More than 830 years old, Creuzburg is one of Germany’s larger Romanesque castle complexes, with a ring wall perimeter of more than 340 metres and an enclosed area of 7,400 square metres. The Werratalmuseum in Gerstungen Castle offers a different perspective on regional history: its 22 exhibition rooms present the history of the region and bring traditional crafts to life.
