Berka/Werra combines historical landmarks with natural history and specific tours on the water or by bike. This lets you choose the focus of your stay based on whether you are more interested in local history, an exhibition by appointment, or an active route. The Rhäden Nature and Bird Sanctuary is also a nearby destination for an excursion.

History and townscape

Berka/Werra was first mentioned in a document in 786. A fortified church dedicated to Saint Lawrence is documented in Berka from 1403; the present-day town hall was built in 1667. These dates mark different points in the town’s history: its first documentary mention, the documented fortified church, and the construction of the present-day town hall. Together, they provide a timeframe spanning several centuries. The term refers to the church building’s defensive character.

The Untertor is the only surviving town gate in the Berka/Werra district. The main street runs from the Untertor to the church. When planning your trip, you can organize the town’s landmarks in two ways: the dates provide a chronological perspective, while the route of the main street provides a spatial one.

Natural history and a place to visit

The exhibition of the Berka/Werra Nature and Environmental Protection Group (Natur- und Umweltschutz Berka/Werra e.V.), featuring an extensive natural history collection, is located in the Altes Stern. It offers plenty of illustrative material, particularly for schoolchildren. The exhibition is open by appointment; keep this in mind when planning your visit. For anyone interested in nature, it offers a different focus from the local buildings and historical dates.

The Rhäden Nature and Bird Sanctuary is a nearby destination for an excursion from Berka/Werra. It may appeal to you if you would like to include the landscape and bird conservation in your travel plans.

On the water and by bike

If you are planning a trip on the water, the canoe or kayak stage from Berka/Werra to Hörschel starts in Berka/Werra. The stage begins in the old half-timbered town of Berka/Werra and leads through the western Thuringian border region toward Hesse. During the GDR era, the border region was sealed off as a restricted area for decades, adding a specific historical context to the route choice. Check current local conditions before setting out.

For planning a cycling trip, the direction is useful: the Werra-Suhltal cycle route passes through WĂĽnschensuhl, past the RengersmĂĽhle mill, and along the Suhl to Berka/Werra. Berka is also the starting point for the Suhltal cycle route toward Marksuhl and Bad Salzungen. The first route follows the described sequence to the town; for the second, Berka is named as the starting point, along with its direction. Check current route conditions before riding the Suhltal cycle route.
