Andenhausen: Nature and trails at Katzenstein
Accommodation in Andenhausen
Andenhausen offers a clear focus for trip planning: landscapes and hiking. The Katzenstein basalt rock rises above the village, and the Schmerbach core zone lies nearby. The area also has a history of a road closure that adds another dimension to Andenhausen. This lets you make nature trails and local history the focus of your stay and choose a hotel to suit your own travel plans.
Hiking at Katzenstein and on the HOCHRHĂ–NER
Katzenstein is a basalt rock above Andenhausen. A hiking trail about 4 km long loops around the rock. Its approximate length gives you a concrete guide for planning your day; also check local conditions before setting out. You can make the trail a distinct part of your stay.
The HOCHRHÖNER is also connected with Andenhausen: its two north–south variants meet again here. The nearby Schmerbach core zone can be reached on foot via the Rhön-Höhen-Weg, the “Green Belt” border hiking trail, and the HOCHRHÖNER. Alongside the trail around Katzenstein, these named routes give you further options for planning an outing.
The Schmerbach core zone
The 4.8-hectare Schmerbach core zone lies near Andenhausen, directly on the Green Belt. It is a natural deciduous forest area with various forest types and a small stream. Those interested in woodland landscapes will find a distinct natural area close to the village. Please observe the trail restrictions when visiting: some areas of the core zone may not be entered off the trails.
A historical look at Andenhausen
The village’s history also includes a striking interruption to its road network. Until November 1989, a road ended abruptly in Andenhausen. In December 1990, the restored road was opened to traffic. These two dates provide a clear historical reference point and add another perspective on Andenhausen to its nature-focused attractions.
Culture and hiking in the wider destination of Kaltennordheim
The wider destination of Kaltennordheim offers further cultural points of interest. St Kilian’s Church was built in the 14th century as a replacement for a wooden church. St Nicholas’s Church was built in 1597 as the town’s second and larger church. A guided town tour called “On Old Tracks” includes, among other places, St Kilian’s Church, the historic old town, and the surviving town wall. It is available on request.
The museum barn at the Kaltennordheim local history museum displays historical farming tools and exhibits on rural everyday life, including baking, milk processing, and food storage. The “Heiratsmarkt” (marriage market) is also part of local history: held annually at Whitsun, it was first held in 1563. In the 19th century, it developed into a folk festival in the Thuringian Rhön; the exact date varies from year to year.
For another hike in the wider destination of Kaltennordheim, the Rhön-Rundweg Kaltennordheim 1 is listed as 11.0 km long, with an approximate duration of four hours. It is rated easy to moderate and starts, among other places, at Kaltennordheim Town Hall. Rhön-Rundweg Kaltennordheim 2 also starts at the town hall and initially follows the Felda through the town. Part of the route passes through the approximately 50-hectare Große Hardt nature reserve. These routes and destinations complement Andenhausen’s own hiking and nature attractions with further options in the wider destination of Kaltennordheim.
