The Hörselberge mountains lie nearby; Schönau, Wutha, Farnroda and Mosbach each offer different starting points for nature and history enthusiasts. If you are looking for a hotel, you can start with your own plans: Would you mainly like to discover the landscape, learn about regional crafts, or explore historic buildings and technical heritage?
The Hörselberge and views along the Rennsteig
The Hörselberge near Wutha-Farnroda form a distinctive, elongated ridge of Muschelkalk limestone, rich in caves. They include the Kleiner Hörselberg at 426 m above sea level, the Mittelberg and the Großer Hörselberg at 484 m above sea level. The municipality’s Mosbach district borders the Rennsteig. The “Die schönen Unbekannten” circular hiking trail along the Rennsteig offers views of the Hörselberge, the Inselsberg, the Drachenstein and Wartburg Castle. The elevations provide a concrete measure of the ridge; the route description adds several named viewpoints to this impression of the landscape.
Museum, baking traditions and railway history
The Hörselberg Museum is housed in a listed group of buildings in Schönau, right at the foot of the Hörselberge. It includes a church, an old schoolhouse, the rectory with its parsonage, stable, barn, washhouse and bakehouse. At the museum, visitors can learn about the geology and formation of the Hörselberge through unique fossil finds. Another exhibition is dedicated to regional baking traditions, with topics including old baking machines, a variety of kitchen utensils and a “baker’s shop as in Grandma’s day.” Here, geological subjects sit alongside a glimpse into the region’s traditional baking culture.
In Wutha, the open-air “Rühler Bimmel” exhibition documents the former route of the Ruhla Railway. It covers the railway’s stations, stops and industrial sidings. The exhibition also includes an original section of track that survived the dismantling work after the railway line was closed. In Schönau, right beside the Hörsel, stands the old Hörsel Mill, a sawmill. Of the village’s three mills, it is the only one that still works.
Historic landmarks in Farnroda
Farnroda Castle Park brings together a pond and the adjoining festival grounds in the middle of the village, providing space for recreation and events. The tower of the former 12th-century moated castle still stands in the park. Another striking building is the detached, well-preserved bell tower of St. Lawrence’s Church in Farnroda, which is unique in Germany. The church itself was first mentioned in a document in the 13th century; this date refers to the church.
The Hellwig Memorial commemorates a precisely identified event: On 17 October 1806, Lieutenant Friedrich Hellwig liberated around 4,000 Prussian prisoners of war at Eichrodt. The site thus connects a local memorial with a specific date and an approximate number of people freed.
Outdoor swimming pool and travel
The Waldbad Mosbach is a modern outdoor swimming pool with stainless-steel pools and solar-heated water. Check the season dates and opening hours before visiting.
